Thankful Thursday

It is always difficult to know what a workshop is going to be like, or if it is going to be something of any real interest or real help.

The workshop that , and have put together is one specifically for parents. One that is looking to nurture, to support and to empower. At its heart, it is looking to offer parents connection, community and an increase in capacity, as well as offering new ways to nurture the parent and in turn the whole family unit.

Our promise to you is that we are there to listen to you, to properly hear what you are saying and to give you some new tools to take away with you that can help when things feel overwhelming. We know that you don’t need fixing and nor do your children. However, parents consistently tell us that they do find parenting tough – and that comes as no surprise – being a parent tests us in more ways than we can ever have imagined!

So, to all of you out there who are looking for support – know that we are here for you. If this workshop isn’t for you – that’s fine – there are other ways that we can look to work with you. Wherever you are at on your parenting journey – if you are considering the idea of support, get in touch – we say it often, but we’d love to hear from you🥰

With you Wednesday

When we started out on Instagram, we always kept Wednesday as a day to remind parents that we were there for them – hence the “With you Wednesday” strapline. It is as pertinent today, as it was when we set up in 2019. Why should parents be expected to just have all the answers simply because they had given birth to a baby? Our latest idea for a workshop – Towards Harmony at Home – with and , came about entirely from wanting to bring parents together, to offer support, nourishment and new ways of looking after themselves as well as the family unit.

As for the last of our 3 words……

Capacity

The length of the workshop is intentional. It is a genuine amount of time dedicated to the parent. Yes, there is time put aside for parents to talk and share – if they want to. The aim however, is for a parent to feel seen, held and heard, alongside feeling nourished by movement, breathwork and sound healing.

So often, the capacity a parent feels they have, is continually eroded by the demands put on them. As humans, we are not built for living in a state where our nervous system is on full alert the whole time. Science knows this, yet society too often fails to appreciate what this does to a person.

Our workshop has as one of its aims therefore, to help us increase our capacity by giving us tools to deal with some of the demands alongside remind us of the power of looking after ourselves.

We look forward to seeing new faces as well as some familiar ones on Sunday 27th September. Please click the link in our bio to book tickets.

Continuing on the theme of the 3 words we wanted to encapsulate the essence of our workshop “Towards Harmony at Home”……..Yesterday’s word was Community. Today’s is:

Connection.

Connection is at the heart of every single human relationship. It is also at the heart of wellness. When we feel deeply connected to others, our need for belonging is satisfied. Connection can give us a sense of purpose, meaning and value in life. The quality of connection in our relationships has been shown to help us cope with tough elements of life such as stress, adversity and negative emotions. Deep connection with others has even been shown to enhance our physical health and how long we live.

When our children feel connected, they feel secure, they learn to love themselves, and in so doing are able to love and trust others. Connection leads to children feeling safe to explore, learn and grow. The connection we build with our children leads them to seek out connection in others as well as a connection with the world around them. In so doing, they learn that everything is inter-connected. It is through connection, that we can break down barriers with others and learn to negotiate, compromise and find a way through.

What we hope parents will take from the workshop, is connection with others who are on their own parenting journey. When we connect with others, it reminds us that we are not on our own. Connection means we feel seen, heard and valued. What we also hope is that the workshop helps parents to lean into connection with themselves. When we have this connection, it helps us to be aware of what is going on in our bodies, which in turn allows us to create space to respond to situations, rather than react.

When we started to think about what we wanted our workshop “Towards Harmony at Home” to look like, we tried to encapsulate its essence in 3 words.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the 3 words that we most wanted as the framework of our workshop, were also words that lie at the heart of the work that we all do , and .

So here goes to the first one!

Community.

We know that communities play a huge part in people’s wellbeing. If we didn’t know it instinctively, data and statistics tell us that people who are more socially connected to family, friends or to a community are more content, physically healthier and have fewer mental health issues.

Finding our tribe is so important when we start out on our parenting journey. We need people around us to support us, to be there for us when things feels really tough, to love and help guide our little people, as well as be there for the good times! When we have children, we realise how true the saying “It takes a village to raise a child” really is.

A big hope for when we set up The Parent Collaborative was to be a part of the parenting community – to make sure that parents understood that they are not on their own – support is out there.

Collaborating with Jen and Fliss has been joyful. Along with bringing the spirit of community to this workshop, we also hope to remind you that we are here for you - in Bath - throughout the year. Here to be a part of your tribe - for you and for your family.

Thursday

Yesterday was an introduction to Fliss Trew , today it is over to Jen Stephens .

Instagram gets a lot of bad rap – in many cases justifiably so. However, it can also be an incredible tool for connecting people. I credit it with bringing me into contact with Jen!

Jen is a fully qualified massage therapist, breathwork coach and sound healer. Jen’s whole approach is a holistic one – the end goal being to nurture people’s health and bring about positive wellbeing. She is motivated by the levels of stress she sees around her and a real desire to bring positive change to people’s busy lifestyles whilst supporting them to live with purpose and fulfilment.

Jen and I, like Fliss, met and bonded over a cup of coffee (or tea in my case!). There were so many crossovers in the ways we wanted to support parents as well as the ways we viewed the journey that is parenthood. We were immediately drawn to working with each other and along with Fliss, we have put together a workshop aimed solely at the parent and their wellbeing. The content is a mixture of movement, breathwork, discussion and exploration about parenting and finishing off with sound healing. Three hours dedicated to the parent.

Parents are often told

“It all starts with the parent”

What parents often don’t have in their life however, is the necessary support to develop ways to nurture themselves so that they can in turn nurture their family.
This workshop provides that opportunity.

We look forward to welcoming you on the 27th September at Yoga Bodhi at 2pm. Click on link in bio to purchase tickets. If you want further details, contact us or . Alternatively call on (07909) 916764.

As promised – here is a short introduction to Fliss Trew from .

Fliss is a qualified coach, resilience and breathwork expert and yoga teacher. She provides services to individuals and organisations, including the education sector where she works with neurodiverse children. In a one-to-one setting Fliss also works with adults, teens and families, helping children and young adults discover their strengths and self-esteem.

Fliss and I met for a coffee over 4 years ago and bonded immediately over a shared love of children, parenting and wanting to support families. We have put together a number of workshops over the years, all aimed at providing parents with knowledge and understanding to embrace their own individual family unit.

Along with Jen Stephens from , we have all been working over the last few months to put together a workshop aimed solely at the parent and their wellbeing. The content is a mixture of movement, breathwork, discussion and exploration about parenting, finishing off with sound healing. Three hours dedicated to the parent.

The start of a new school year. Back to in-person meetings with parents in Bath, alongside remote meetings with parents around the UK, and an exciting collaboration to look forward to with and .

I thought it was therefore a good time to re-introduce myself, as well as, this week, do a bit of an intro to Fliss and Jen - the other vital components of the collaboration at the end of the month. Many of you will already know them. However, for those of you who don’t - they need to be added to your list of people who are there to support you and your family’s wellbeing🥰

Back to that short re-introduction!

We have been working with parents in Bath and beyond since September 2019. Our aim has always been simple – to support parents in order that they in turn can go on to support their children and build the family unit that they have always wanted. This means we look at parenting intentionally. We look behind behaviour to try to understand what is going on for children. We help parents to take an holistic approach – one that supports a child’s emotional, mental and physical health. We do not tell parents that they must blindly follow a script, or a one-size fits all approach to parenting. We take the approach of listening to parents, who know their children better than anyone else, and to working with them to drill down into ensuring that they have the scaffolding on which to hang their own individual parenting strengths and skills.

So – if you have been considering parental support – get in touch, we’d love to hear from you. If you want to do this alongside other parents – at a workshop aimed specifically at the parent and their wellbeing, grab a ticket to Harmony at Home – link in bio.

Thankful Thursday

We are thrilled that Lisa Galley - - agreed to write today’s guest blog, about giving parents permission to parent their autistic child differently.

At The Parent Collaborative, we always talk to parents about the power of accepting their child for who they are and meeting them where they are at – a vital ingredient of the Montessori ethos.

We talk to parents about how their child isn’t broken – they don’t need fixing. What is required is understanding about how to work with our children rather than fighting against them.

This is something that Lisa found the courage to do in her own parenting journey, and when she did, she talks about the ways it changed how she parented.

There isn’t a one-size fits all way of parenting - there isn’t a perfect adult, child or way to parent. Lisa Galley’s book – Parenting your autistic child – Permission to do it differently – comes out on August 27th. We are excited for its publication and for it to support parents everywhere.

With you Wednesday

Making that initial phone call, sending that first email. This is what parents tell us is almost the hardest part of the process of reaching out for support. The average length of time from when a parent decides they need support, to finally taking that first step, appears to be 8 months.

On , please know that we are here – to listen, to understand and to work with parents, to slowly find a calm and peaceful way through whatever it is that they may be navigating. We are trying to find alternative ways of reaching parents – we know how tough things are financially at the moment for a lot of families. If parenting support is what you feel your family could benefit from, please get in touch – there are always financial options that can be considered. If you know someone who is struggling, we would likewise encourage you to help support them to reach out. Parenting can feel hard at times – it does for everyone - regardless of how things may appear on the surface. No-one has all the answers – there isn’t a “one size fits all” way to parent.

What we do know, from experience, is that having support in place, can be the difference between thriving and surviving. We feel huge gratitude for all those parents who have reached out, and hope that showing you some of the feedback we get, will convince anyone who is considering parenting support, that it is so worthwhile. We will not insist on any set number of sessions - each family has different needs and is treated on an individual basis. Reaching out may feel hard - what we promise is that we will have your backs once you've got in touch with us!

Thankful Thursday

When we first started out, posts written for Thursday were purposefully written along the lines of remembering the power of gratitude – hence .

This year has been a big one for our family – with weddings and the birth of a baby being highlights and illness being one we are currently navigating.

Likening being on a rollercoaster is one we often use when it comes to family life. No parent goes through parenthood without asking some fairly tough questions of themselves, whilst also trying to come up with answers of how to get through certain situations.

What none of us can do without is support – we all need our tribe, our village. For us at The Parent Collaborative, we feel hugely proud and hugely grateful to have been asked to be part of the parenting journey for so many families in so many different ways. Our promise to you, if you are thinking of reaching out for support, is that we are there for you – to listen, to understand and to work together to move forward in ways that are right for your family situation.

Call us, email us, text us – we are there for you as parents. Supporting parents so they in turn can support their children – that’s the aim. We look forward to hearing from you.
