I’ve got something very exciting to share! 📸🐴

In November, I’m off to Scotland to take part in an incredible equine photography shoot with Angelfire Photography — and I’m taking my 16-year-old daughter with me!

She’s currently studying photography at college, and I want to do my best to open up as many opportunities for her as I can. Equine photography has been a passion of mine since I opened Back On Track. I absolutely love photographing and editing these amazing creatures, so when I saw Lucy had spaces available, I thought, “Right… how can I make this happen?” Within an hour, I’d booked two places and sorted out a five-day trip to make the ten-hour journey worthwhile!

The shoot will take place in an ancient Scottish forest, right by the Highlands, on land with sections of stone wall dating back 400 years — somewhere very few people get to set foot.

It’s a collaboration with Highlands Unbridled, with a wonderful selection of horses. We’ll be photographing ridden and non-ridden portraits with Friesians, Clydesdales, Icelandics and more, inspired by local legends and folklore. It sounds like a truly one-of-a-kind experience!

Poor Warrior had his teeth done yesterday, and while the lovely Jess from Beccles Equine Veterinary Services was here, I mentioned that he’d had a runny eye for a couple of days.

It turns out there are some funky things going on in that eye — lots of long vet words, but the short version is that we need to treat him for uveitis but there is more going on 😭😭He’s now on strong pain relief and eye drops and creams, and I’ve bought him two UV protective masks to help protect his eyes he has to have them on all the time for now ..

They do make him look even more adorable, though! 🥹

He’s my emotional support pony and honestly cheers me up every single day. We love you, Warrior — even if we might giggle at your new look just a tiny bit! 💙🐴

🦷 Dental day today! 🦷

We’ll be doing around 4–6 horses each week until we’ve worked our way through the whole herd.

Aintree was first up and was very good, although he needed a little top-up of sedation because he burns through it so quickly—the little stress head! 😂

He also had a blood test to check for PPID (Cushing’s), so we’ll update you when his results come back. 🐴❤️

Beautiful golden hour at Back on Track this evening 🌅🐴

We’re making the most of these lighter evenings while we still can. The horses’ coats are beginning to change, there’s less warmth in the late-evening sun, and you can definitely feel that winter is on its way 🍂

But for now, we’ll soak up every last bit of golden sunshine 🤎

Little Warrior had to make the move onto the track today, as we were becoming concerned about the amount of grass and his feet feeling warm 🦶💚

Unfortunately, this means his girlfriend Hathern is staying in the paddock for now, as she isn’t very keen on track life! We’ll keep gently trying with her, but Warrior’s welfare must always come first.

For now, he has paired up with Little Alan. It’s still early days, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on him and seeing how he settles without his usual partner.

Hathern is in the paddock in the middle of the track, so they can still see each other and meet nose-to-nose over the fence 🥰🐴

When little Doris arrived with her son Alan, we couldn’t get near her at all. She was frightened of everything and everyone, and we even had to carefully corner her for farrier visits.

But time, patience and kindness can change so much. ❤️

Slowly, Doris began to soften and trust us. Now she comes looking for cuddles, and we can calmly walk up to her and catch her—no cornering and no treats needed.

She has come such a long way, and we’re incredibly proud of our brave little Doris. 🥰🐴

🐴 Could your horse cope with an entire winter without turnout?

I remember when it was quite normal for some livery yards to close their fields from October until spring to protect the ground. Is that still happening now?

We care for more than 40 horses and ponies, and although managing the land through a wet British winter can be challenging, we never completely close our paddocks. I realise we’re probably not the norm, though!

Has winter management changed, with more yards now offering track systems, surfaced areas, dedicated winter paddocks or shorter turnout times?

What will your horse’s routine look like this winter—daily turnout, restricted turnout or no turnout at all?

Would you ever loan your horse? 🐴❤️

I have loaned horses three times over the past 20 years, and thankfully they have all been very positive experiences.

But—and it’s a big but—I have always checked in regularly. I ask for monthly updates, including photos of their feet and overall condition. I also get references and, most importantly, I have only ever loaned to friends—or friends of friends—so there has always been a trusted connection.

This week, we said goodbye to my daughter’s horse, Harry. (She has long since hung up her riding hat when she went to uni) -He has gone to live in the New Forest with Zak, who volunteered here for a year. He has a way with horses v v calm ☺️

Zak was moving away to start an amazing new carpentry job and asked if Harry could go with him. It felt like such a wonderful opportunity for them both.

Harry left very early on Thursday morning—5:30am!—and arrived safely. He has already settled in beautifully and fitted into his new home as if he has always been there.

These photos were taken on his very first afternoon. 🥹

Of course I’ll miss him, but I know Harry and Zak will help each other grow and have some incredible adventures together.

Harry is an absolute dude—and Zak is too. ❤️🐴

I may even consider loaning out my big girl, Clover 🍀, one day. I would never sell her, but after such positive experiences, I’m open to the idea if the perfect home and person came along.

Whatever next with this horse?! 😂🙈 Part 2…

Of course it needed stitches AND antibiotics! Would we really have expected anything less? It is George, after all! 🤦‍♀️🐴

As always, Equine came to the rescue. The lovely Sophie got out her sewing kit and appliquéd a beautiful butterfly and sunset scene beneath his eye… only joking! 😂🪡🦋🌅

But yes—stitches were definitely needed!

Millie, one of our volunteers, absolutely loved watching all the gore. She clearly has a stronger stomach than some of us! 🤢😂

We still have no idea how George managed it. Horses really are mysterious creatures—sometimes you find the culprit immediately, and other times you’re left staring around the paddock thinking:

How? How? HOW?! 🤷‍♀️

Thankfully, George is all stitched up, has his antibiotics and is doing well. ❤️
