Ben finishes 11th at ESAA Pentathlon Championships

Ben Philips finished a very creditable 11th at the English Schools’ Pentathlon Championships held in Bedford last weekend. With the pentathlon lacking some of Ben’s strongest events, the javelin, discus and pole vault – the latter of which he is currently English Schools champion, he was always going to find it harder than he did in winning the England U15 Octathlon in August.

Nevertheless, Ben set personal lifetime bests in hurdles (14.97s) shot (12.65m) and 800m (2m 21.06) with his 5.40m long jump only a couple of centimetres short of his PB. His total score of 2676 points surpassed his previous Pentathlon best by over 600 points.

Eastern Masters Track & Field League Final 2026 🏆

The Club's Men's Masters Team was competing in the Eastern Masters Track & Field League Final at Milton Keynes on Saturday 19th September.

In the qualifying League matches through the summer Bedford had been the top qualifying team and Milton Keynes the second best across the whole of the Eastern Region.

With the Final of the Top 8 teams being at Milton Keynes , the home club had orchestrated a major campaign to seize back the Trophy that Bedford won last year.

This looked to be aided by the absence of some of Bedford's top Masters athletes through illness, injury and family commitments.

However, Team Manager Jim Keech was not prepared to let Milton Keynes have an easy ride and through skilful deployment of the available resources (who had ever seen Bob Kingman Long, High and Triple Jumping before?) was able to rise to the challenge and set the standard throughout the day.

Despite an unfortunate disqualification in the relay at the end of the day Bedford still ran out winners with 319 pts to Milton Keynes' 294.5 and 3rd placed Cambridge & Coleridge on 251 pts.

A very convincing winning margin created through a very large number of individual event wins- too many to list all but including Scott Johnson M35 HJ, Peter Benedickter M50 400m and 400m Hurdles, Adam Hills A string Walk, John Borgars in the B string walk, Bob Kingman in the M35 PV(he is in the next age group up!), Andy Leach in the M60 3000m and Anthony S in the M70 3000m, Following Simon Coombes in the M50 3000m, Graeme Packman in the M70 shot and Discus and Tenny James in the M60 300m Hurdles and more.

And many, many good 2nd places too.

A very successful end to the season demonstrating Bedford & County to be the top Men's Masters Athletics Club in the East of England.

Next year's task has to be to have the same success with the Ladies.

There have been some outstanding results from our junior throwers as the 2026 season draws to a close.

Representing Bedfordshire at the Southern Inter-Counties Match, Holder Botha produced two excellent personal bests. He improved his discus PB by a huge three metres, recording a very impressive 41.52m. At the same meeting, he extended his shot put best to 11.82m.

At the annual Ron Bowden Memorial Hammer Competition at Woodford Green, Mia Flynn and Bismarck Botha claimed victory in their respective age groups.

Mia returned to her early-season form with an excellent throw of 53.26m to win the U16 girls’ competition. Her victory earned her a nearly new 4kg competition hammer, which had been used at the recent European Championships in Birmingham.

Not to be outdone, Holder’s younger brother, Bismarck, produced a remarkable performance in his very first hammer competition. He threw beyond 31 metres to win the U12 event—and took home a brand-new hammer as his prize.

A fantastic set of results to bring the 2026 season to a close and provide plenty of momentum heading into a strong winter of training.

On Sunday 13 September 15 of the Club’s U16 & U18 athletes made the journey to Chelmsford again to represent Bedfordshire in the Southern Intercounties, coming away with 7 top 3 finishes and 6 PBs.

EYAL Top Six Final - Junior Team Battle Right To The End!

Our Junior athletes made the long journey to Chelmsford to take part in the EYAL Top Six Final. We finished a very commendable 5th overall, 13 points behind 4th and 35 behind 3rd. The athletes produced an amazing 44 PBs (16 for the girls and 28 for the boys).

Adam completes seventh star marathon at Sydney 🌟

Bedford & County's Adam Harris completed the TCS Sydney marathon, adding to his numerous sub-3-hour finishes and a Seven-Star award for the World Abbot Major marathon series on the 30th August 2026.

He has already achieved the prestigious marathon majors Six-Star award, by running the London, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, New York City marathons and the Tokyo marathon with the club Vice president Paula unwittingly finishing close by who also has a 6 Star. Adam met up with Paula at the Sydney marathon where she was commentating to sign his vest.

Club record for Oriana at the World Masters Athletics Championships 🙌

Oriana Johnson competed in the W65 Women’s Hammer Throw at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Oriana produced an excellent performance to finish 19th overall, exceeding her pre-competition ranking in a very strong international field that saw seven athletes throw beyond 30 metres.

Her best throw of 19.78m was the third-longest competition throw of her career and, even more impressively, set a new W65 club record.

Oriana added more than 2.5 metres to the previous record, set by Dorothy Fraser in 2004, bringing a 22-year-old club record to an end.

A superb achievement on the world stage and a performance Oriana can be extremely proud of.
