Traditional aikido club in Bedford Aikido is a defensive, Japanese martial art utilising locks and throws to control, redirect and neutralise an attack.

As a result it’s an effective martial art that anyone can learn to defend against almost any attack. The principals of aikido are taught through various exercises including partner practice, weapons and multiple attackers. Students are taught the art through learning principals and practicing in classes that are safe, fun and friendly.

🎉 Congratulations, Sebastian and Troy! A lot of graft over the past few months (and years!) to earn the result.

Achieving a dan grade (black belt) typically takes close to ten years of commitment, dedication, and perseverance. We train in the club and students are externally assessed by an appointed grading panel.

No amount of money can replace the personal effort required to reach this level — there’s only one route to it, and that’s long‑term, consistent hard work. Well done, gents. 🥋👏

Thanks to Gordon Jones for today’s class, that was humid one but great to see so many people come along and add energy, even with the hot weather!

Thanks to Stuart Lovering for teaching our class last night. The great thing about being in an aikido network is exposure to other teachers and their styles.

Thanks to the club for support!

That was a hot one tonight!

🥋 Fresh mats, softer landings, stronger training!

Big news for the dojo — we’ve upgraded our mats from 20mm to 40mm, giving everyone a softer, more supportive surface to train on. Whether you’re practising ukemi or pushing your limits, the new mats make every session safer and more enjoyable.

Before we could lay them down, we gave them a proper clean. A huge thank you to everyone who helped — teamwork off the mat is just as important as on it.

See you on the mat 🥋

Fibonacci must have studied aikido. Tonight we looked at receiving a strike and making a wrist lock. This is a good way to show it
