Tennis tips on Fridays! Follow Tennis Ireland for more tips every Friday💡

Tennis Tip Friday 🎾

We continue our fortnightly series PLAY WINNING TENNIS, written by Peter Farrell. Peter is a Level 4 coach who works extensively in the Tennis Ireland Coach Education Programme. The series will build into a library of tips that can help make your match play more effective. Today, secrets of success with the drop shot🔥

The drop shot - used to devastating effect by Carlos Alcaraz at this year’s Wimbledon!

WHY?
Use it to tire an opponent, to vary the rhythm of play and to bring a baseliner to the net.

WHEN?
Often played off a short ball (one that lands inside or around the service line area). Playing it off a deep ball is difficult. Even if you play it well, your opponent has lots of time to react, since it is a soft shot travelling a long distance.
Use sparingly for maximum effect.

HOW?
Focus on hitting the ball gently.
Some players make the mistake of attempting to hit it with a lot of slice. To get heavy slice you must swing at the ball, and swinging gives you too much power.
Prepare as you would for a normal groundstroke - “disguise it” – to take your opponent by surprise.

Playing tennis this weekend? Try out a few drop shots! 🎾
