Critical thinking and figuring out what may have been missed can often help when working with new athletes, or even assessing current athletes training blocks.

No coach is perfect, and you simply don’t know what you don’t know.

Frequently assessing and reiterating is a huge part of this process.

I’ve been turning a few of the questions for weekly q and A’s into videos.

Here is one!

Strength here being defined as amount of force produced, needed to overcome a load.

Technique being how much of that force produced can actually be transferred into the barbell.

This game for me has always been about Joy.

Following it, and chasing my curiosity.

That’s it.

I still have days where I have to check myself, that this is even my job.

One thing that I’ve noticed having been in these game a while now, is that real truthful, purposeful effort towards a goal.

Where you actually lay it on the line, and get out of your own way, allows a person to reach a level of serenity in the pursuit of that goal, knowing that they did everything they could, all that they had. (Shout out to for the vocab on this one!)

To truthfully level up, I think there is a level of vulnerability that one has to be exposed to reach the next stage, a lot of people won’t like it, might hold you back etc etc. But that’s also why a lot of people remain average.

Food for thought I guess.

This has been really highlighted to me with a few recent conversations.

Time is a finite resource.

A shotgun covers a wide area, but doesn’t go very far.

You probably want to be approaching things with intention.

Stop wasting time, start improving your total.

The goal is iteration and incremental improvement over time.

Better over time.

That’s it.

Hi, unless you’re literally gonna be competing at Sheffield, you probably don’t need a 6x SBD, and tbh, even if you are there, you probably don’t even need it.

Powerlifting is not a massively skill based sport, different from something like basketball where number of shots put up in a week likely correlates to better outcomes. Number of lifts in a given week does not always take better results.

Progressively doing more of time is a natural progression of a strength where, however, jumping on the next trend is likely going to kill you off in the long term.

Source; trust me, bro.

Sometimes you get to go on a journey with a client, from contender to champion. From uncertainty to confidence. I remember the on-boarding call with Hannah and speaking about what I believed she was capable of, to see it all come together, and to see how much growth there has been as a human along the way, is a really really cool reminder to me about what coaching is all about. Sure the wins and “NATIONAL CHAMP BABY” is cool and all. (Hannah won’t stop reminding everyone 🫪).

The cool part is the growth, even when you fail, even when it doesn’t go perfectly to plan.

Yoshi is the mvp btw.

It’s often a narrative that, “it’s not a real sport” or “it’s easy”.

I would disagree to both, is it a sport in the sense that your opposition can directly affect the outcomes of your own lifting, no. It’s what’s known as a “closed sport”. Similar to diving, gymnastics or throwing events.

However, training to be better at powerlifting really is stacking a series of good training decisions, and standing on your own business for prolonged periods.

You might start at a 40kg deadlift, or 240kg deadlift, but to get better, we all need to follow similar steps.
