Futsal, which originated in Uruguay and soon flourished in Brazil and Argentina, is FIFA's only officially approved version of small-sided football; the same can also be said for UEFA and The FA. With a regulation size 4 ball, a smooth hard playing surface, scaled down versions of standard football goals and touchlines instead of barrier boards, it is the closest representation of the 11-a-side game whilst adopting a small-sided format. Teams consist of 5 players on the pitch at any one time, plus up to 7 substitutes, and rolling substitutions are available throughout. Games typically consist of two 20 minute halves, and the benefits at all levels are universally apparent. For all-time legends such as Pele, Socrates and Zico to contemporary superstars such as Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, Futsal has been cited as a crucial aspect in the development of their game. Amongst many things, it aids close control, composure, speed of thought, fitness and spatial awareness on the pitch.
