Birmingham Bulls Statement on the Passing of Former National Championship Quarterback John Riggs

The Birmingham Bulls are deeply saddened to announce the passing of John Riggs, former National Championship–winning quarterback and one of the most important players in our club’s history. John passed away peacefully at his home in Tennessee at the age of 63 in April.

A proud alumnus of Chadron State College in Nebraska, John arrived in Birmingham in 1994 and made an immediate impact. In his debut season he led the Bulls all the way to the National Final, taking the mighty London Olympians to the brink and falling just a field goal short of one of Britball’s great upsets.

He returned in 1995 even better — sharper, tougher, and utterly determined. That season became the stuff of Bulls folklore. John guided the team to what remains our most recent National Championship, earning Game MVP honours in a thrilling 34–30 victory in Solihull. His leadership, competitive fire, and calm under pressure defined that era of Bulls football.

John Riggs was more than a quarterback. He was a standard‑setter. A champion. A Bull forever.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former teammates, and everyone across the Britball community who remembers his talent and his spirit.

Rest easy, John. Once a Bull, always a Bull.
