This was a little trick I would use frequently in matches.

A defender’s responsibility is to get tight and force the play backwards. However, when an attacker understands that it is impossible for a defender to always achieve that, use their forward momentum to your benefit. Have a clear picture of where the space is your touch needs to take you. It is too difficult for them to slow down when working hard to get tight and if the touch is right, they’re out of the game.

Constantly checking your shoulder so you can gage the distance is vital 💪🏽

If it was easy, everyone would do it. I get what it’s like being a youngster and having a coach/mentor in your ear 24 7.

The facts are, the football industry is ruthless and it owes nobody anything. If you want it, graft for it or drop the expectations.

I have been tinkering with this idea on and off for years. The majority of young players I work with don’t fully understand what level they need to be working at. So instead of talking, I’m going to show them with actions.

We were delighted to welcome Oliver and Harrison to the SJUS Football & Education Programme for their recent work experience placement.

From the moment they arrived, both boys showed a fantastic attitude, hardworking, respectful, and fully committed to getting involved in every aspect of the programme. They integrated seamlessly into the group, built strong relationships, and were always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed.

Their enthusiasm for football and willingness to learn did not go unnoticed. Alongside their strong work ethic, both Oliver and Harrison demonstrated real talent on the pitch, showing the kind of potential that, with continued dedication and effort, can take them a long way in the game.

It’s been a pleasure having them with us this week, and they are a credit to themselves. We look forward to seeing how they progress in the future, the foundations are certainly there for something special.
