We would like to address the situation regarding the use of earphones, either overhead or in ear, and the subsequent actions that have taken place since the Bognor Prom 10K Road Race held on Sunday 12th May 2024.
At the point of entry there was a tick box stating that the event would be run under UKA Athletics rules which all entrants had to tick to enter the race. Our licence to run the event is granted on the basis that the event will run according to these rules.
Rules set out by UK Athletics state that those who wear bone conducting headphones and/or medically prescribed headphones are acceptable as it doesn't impede the ability of the participant to hear any instructions given by a marshal or other officials on the course. UK Athletics also state that in ear headphones and over the ear headphones are not permitted.
This is for your safety and others around you as the event is not run on fully closed roads. UKA Athletics Rule TR55 S5 UKA Supplement Headphones 2024 to 2026 says they are not permitted on any shared usage courses including, but not limited to, open roads, parks, recreation grounds, seafront promenades, public footpaths and other such areas where those not participating in the race may be present.
Sadly on Sunday we did have a medical incident on Limmer Lane where the first aid responder and lead marshal had to make their way through the runners on bicycles to provide urgent medical care and attention to a collapsed runner. Despite alerting the runners ahead to move to the right hand side of the road so that they could ride through safely without incident, those who were wearing in ear headphones didn't react to the calls from marshals or the first aider on the bicycles until the last minute, or even worse didn't react at all, delaying their assistance.
We must ensure that the safety of every runner, volunteer and member of the public around the course is maintained to the highest standard to be able to put on this event safely.
Each race has an independent Race Adjudicator, who is assigned to the race to ensure the race is compliant and safe with any rules implemented. Instruction was given that we had to disqualify all those with in ear or overhead earphones.
Every year we put on the event we are required to apply for a race licence to be able to hold it. If a Race Adjudicator deems our event unsafe or there is a risk to safety then we may not be granted the licence. Without the licence we don't have a race. This is something that none of us want.
If you have received a disqualification email but were wearing ‘bone conduction’ earphones please email [email protected] with details of your race number and we will review your result.
Thankfully the runner who collapsed received medical attention and made a good recovery.
Best wishes,
Bognor Prom 10K Road Race.
