⛵ Always wanted to try sailing but don’t know where to start?

You don’t need to own a boat, have sailing experience, or know all the nautical terminology to get involved with our sailing club! 🌊

Our club is a great place for beginners to take their first steps on the water. You’ll meet friendly, experienced sailors who can show you the basics, answer your questions and help you build your confidence at your own pace.

Whether you’re looking for a new hobby, keen to get outdoors, want to meet new people, or simply fancy trying something different, sailing is a fantastic way to spend time on the water.

Not sure if sailing is for you? That’s absolutely fine! Come along, have a chat, meet the club and find out what it’s all about. There’s no need to arrive knowing how to sail — everyone has to start somewhere! ⚓

From learning the basics and getting out on the water to becoming part of a welcoming community, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Congratulations to Warren Price on receiving an RYA Impact Award, recognising the significant and lasting difference he has made to our sport through his dedication and passion.
Warren was presented with the award today by RYA Regional Manager, Adam McGovern.

Over the years, Warren has worked tirelessly to establish and grow Sailability at Bolton, creating opportunities for countless people with disabilities to experience the freedom, confidence and enjoyment that sailing brings. The positive impact he has had on so many lives is truly remarkable.
It's his vision and drive that have been at the heart of our growth and success, helping to make sailing more accessible and inclusive for all. This award is a fitting recognition of the extraordinary work he has carried out, often behind the scenes, and we are so proud.

Congratulations, Warren, and thank you for everything you do.

🔥🎆 BONFIRE NIGHT AT BOLTON SAILING CLUB! 🎆🔥

The nights are drawing in, and we’ve got the perfect way to spend an autumn evening!

Join us at Bolton Sailing Club on Saturday 7th November for an evening packed with everything you could want from Bonfire Night. 🍂🔥

🎇 Spectacular fireworks
🔥 Bonfire to keep you warm
🌭 Hot food to keep the hunger away
☕ Hot drinks for those chilly autumn evenings
🍻 The bar will be open with drinks available throughout the evening
🤝 And, of course, plenty of great company and a fantastic atmosphere!

Yesterday marked the final race of the RYA Northern Sailability Series 2026 at Otley Sailing Club, with several of our sailors taking part. A gusty breeze made for exciting racing with different winners in all 3 races. A wonderfully friendly atmosphere and fantastic competition made the day a huge success. A massive thank you to everyone who made the day possible.

The 2026/27 Dom Barnes Coaching winter programme is now open.
Last winter They coached nearly 50 sailors. This year they're taking the programme to more clubs across the Midlands and North, with one thing staying exactly the same: proper coaching.
They normally work at around 3 to 4 sailors per coach, so they can actually watch you, identify what’s costing you speed or places, work on it with you and see whether it improves.
They’ll cover the things that decide races: boat handling, boat speed, starts, the first 100 metres, upwind and downwind technique, mark roundings, tactics and decision-making.
Most single-handed classes are welcome, and sailors are coached at their own level.
If you want to be noticeably better by spring, this is what the winter is for.
Places are limited at each venue.

Bolton Sailing Club teams take on the West Lancashire Yacht Club 24 Hour Race

Bolton Sailing Club was well represented at this year’s West Lancashire Yacht Club 24 Hour Race, with two teams taking on the challenge of sailing continuously through day and night.

The annual event is a fantastic test of endurance, teamwork and sailing skill, bringing clubs and crews together for 24 hours of racing.

This year, Bolton Sailing Club entered both a Firefly team and a GP14 team, with both crews putting in a huge effort throughout the event.

Our Firefly team finished in 10th place, while the GP14 team finished 33rd.

The results are a great reflection of the commitment from everyone involved, with sailors taking turns on the water throughout the 24 hours and support crews helping to keep everything running smoothly.

A huge well done and thank you to all of our sailors and support teams who represented Bolton Sailing Club. And thank you to everyone who came along to support the teams and cheer them on during the event.

It was fantastic to see two Bolton teams taking on the challenge and proudly flying the club burgee at West Lancashire Yacht Club.

Well done, everyone! ⛵👏

There’s something special about sailing into autumn.

The changing weather brings new challenges, the colours around the water begin to change, and there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy some great days on the water with friends and fellow sailors.

As we head into the new season, we’re looking forward to:

⛵ Getting out on the water whenever conditions allow
🌬️ Enjoying the challenge of autumn winds
🧭 Building confidence and developing sailing skills
🤝 Sharing time on the water with our sailing community
☕ Enjoying the social side of the club, on and off the water

For those who sail regularly, autumn is a great chance to make the most of your time on the water. And for those who perhaps haven't been sailing for a while, it’s a perfect time to get involved again.

At Bolton Sailing Club, it’s not just about the sailing — it’s the people, the experiences and the sense of being part of something that makes every season enjoyable.

So, as summer draws to a close, we’re looking forward to crisp mornings, fresh winds and plenty more time on the water.

More Than a Place to Sail

Sailing club membership can offer much more than access to the water.

Practical facilities and services can make boat ownership easier and more enjoyable, while providing a convenient base from which to make the most of your time afloat. Whether it’s the clubhouse, boat storage, launching, berthing or other facilities, membership can bring together the things that make sailing more straightforward.

There is also the benefit of experience. Fellow members can offer valuable local knowledge, practical advice and years of experience — whether you are maintaining a boat, planning a passage or simply looking to get more from your time on the water.

And sailing need not be an individual pursuit.

A lifelong interest, shared across generations.

Sailing offers families the opportunity to spend time together away from the usual routines. Younger sailors can develop practical skills, confidence and independence, while parents and grandparents can share their enthusiasm and experience.

Whether racing, cruising, learning or simply enjoying a day afloat, sailing provides opportunities for families to enjoy the water together and create experiences that stay with them.

New to sailing?

You don’t need any sailing experience to become a member of our club.

Sailing is a great way to stay active, learn new skills and spend time outdoors. It provides a gentle but effective form of exercise, while also giving you something practical and interesting to learn.

There is another side to sailing too. Learning how to handle a boat, understand the wind and make decisions on the water can build confidence and keep you thinking. And because you’re learning alongside other people, it’s a natural way to meet others, make new friendships and enjoy being part of a club.

For many people, joining a sailing club is about more than taking up a new sport. It’s about finding a new interest, getting out on the water and spending time with good people.

You don’t need to know where to start. You just need to be willing to try.
