This prestigious national honour recognises exceptional voluntary groups, and the nomination reflects the commitment, skill and dedication of our volunteers who work tirelessly to make sailing accessible to all. We are extremely proud of everyone involved in the Sailability programme.

Hi everyone,

On behalf of myself and the General Committee, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

It has been a fantastic year at the club. We want to thank every one of you for making our sailing club so special. Whether you’ve been out on the water, helping behind the scenes, or simply enjoying the social side of the club, thank you for your support throughout 2025.

We hope you have a wonderful and relaxing festive break with your families.

🎃 Trick or treat… how about a buggy for our fleet? 👻

Joanne once thought she’d only watch from the shore. Now she sails with pride, thanks to Bolton SC Sailability and our incredible volunteers.

We’re nearly at our £1,000 goal for a buggy to help keep this magic going. This buggy will help us keep changing lives like Joanne’s, who now sails despite her neurological condition. ⛵️💖

Bolton Sailing Club was a fantastic place to be this weekend, as we were delighted to host the GP14 Class National Youth Championship. The atmosphere was brilliant, and it was a real privilege to see so many young sailors out on our water.

A huge well done to Jasper Bramwell (Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club) and Lewis Bacon (Leigh & Lowton SC) on their win!

We also want to celebrate every sailor who took part, especially those who only learned to sail this summer. We were impressed by the passion you showed for the sport, your boat handling was superb, and the future of the GP14 Fleet is clearly in great hands. We’re immensely proud to have hosted you all. ⛵💙

Events like this are only possible thanks to the incredible commitment of our volunteers. A massive thank you to the race team, the galley crew, safety boat drivers, adult crews, bar team, and all the supporting families. Your care made the whole weekend run smoothly.

📢 Hot off the press!

Fantastic news, everyone! Our reservoir is back with the island nearly cut off again. The old road is now completely under water. The water level is up to -3.2m (was -7m) so it has come up 3.8m in a fortnight & 2m in 24 hours!!!

It's time to get ready for a great day on the water 🥳⛵️

At Bolton Sailing Club, we've seen firsthand how Sailability changes lives. It's a vital part of our club that allows people with health conditions or limited mobility to get out on the water.

Sailing is one of the very few sports where able-bodied and disabled sailors can participate on equal terms. Imagine the thrill of sailing a boat at speed even though you can't walk, or of joining a sport where deafness doesn't matter.

Our member, Joanne Quinnell, is a perfect example of this. She lives with a neurological condition that limits her mobility and once thought she'd only be a spectator. Now, thanks to our dedicated volunteers and the support of the club, she's out on the water and sailing! ⛵️👏

To keep this a reality for Joanne and others, we need your help. Our volunteers, many of whom are retired, are struggling to pull boats up the slipway because of low water levels. We need to raise £1,000 for a golf buggy to help them. This will ensure we can continue to provide this vital service to our Sailability members. 🙏

This isn't just about a vehicle; it's about supporting our amazing volunteers and ensuring our club can keep providing life changing opportunities for people like Joanne.

In Memory of Handel Platt ❤️ 🕊️
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Handel Platt, a long-standing member and Honorary Life Member of Bolton Sailing Club, who passed away on Thursday 10th July.

Handel was a familiar face to many, often sharing his sailing wisdom with sailors amongst the club. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

The funeral service will be held at Harwood Methodist Church, Longsight, Harwood, Bolton BL2 3HX, at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 1st. Handel will be laid to rest at Tottington Road Chapel in a private family burial.
Following the service, all are warmly invited back to Bolton Sailing Club for refreshments and an opportunity to share cherished memories of Handel.

The family has advised that there is no need to wear black. In lieu of flowers, donations are kindly requested to the RNLI.
