Summer League Round 8 - Summer league closed out at Davyhulme Park Golf Club, in dryer than anticipated conditions, although the summer of burnt out fairways and lots of run is over.
Dave Birchall stormed to victory, scoring 2 chip-ins on his way to a nett 75, with Brian James taking the runner up spot with a solid round. Paul Robinson won Nearest the Pin and Jimmy Shaw took the sweep. And £5 went to Les Davenport for 2 on a Par 4 🦅.
In the matchplay, final Trevor and Les were all square and the match will go to replay because none of them thought to have a play-off hole.
As this was the final game of the season we also confirmed final positions in the table (which will be updated on Oakiesgc.co.uk in due course) but winning the Summer League with an unassailable 47 points was Dave Birchall. 🥇 🏆 (Pic below of him being presented the trophy by Trev.)
The putting challenge also completed today and was won by Trevor Orrell. (Pic below of him being presented the trophy by Dave.)

Summer League Round 8 - "And all at once, summer collapsed into fall."
This Sunday sees the Oakies head to Davyhulme Park Golf Club for round 8 of 8 of this seasons Summer League, pulling down the curtain on a fine summer of golf. Everything is up for grabs as Dave & Trevor battle it out for the league title, Brian & Trevor battle it out for the Captains Challenge and Les & Trevor battle it out in the Match Play Final. Trevor seems to have more battle fronts than WWII. The rest of us can enjoy a delightful stroll around this mostly flat course and hope to pick Trevor in the sweep. 🤞🏻

A great day and some decent scoring as we played Dunscar Golf Club for The Redbridge Trophy.
Trevor Orrell claimed another 2026 title, beating Gareth Hammond on countback as they both came in with 34 points. Trevor’s win gave Paul Shaw the Sweep. Trevor Orrell also won Nearest the Pin on the gorgeous 16th hole. Finishing off the winnings was Paul Molyneux who won £205 by scoring a 2 on the 2’s hole. He graciously bought a round for all. 🍻
Next up - Davyhulme Park on 30th August.

🚨 MAJOR ALERT! 🚨 Our fifth Major of the season has arrived. The Redbridge Trophy will take place at Dunscar Golf Club. Who will emerge victorious? Will it be defending champion Jimmy Shaw? Will it be Trevor Orrell continuing his rich vein of form? Will it be big hitting Paul Robinson? Will it be Michael Phillips finally not slicing OB on the 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th? Will it be Paul Shaw channeling his Disley form? Will it be the person who scores the most Stableford points? Yes, that last one! Find out who on Sunday.
Majors are Stableford comps and the captains challenge is postponed.

- Trevor Orrell won with a nett 72, winning by 2 shots from Tony Littler.
- Paul Shaw won NTP and won the sweep, whilst Trevor Orrell chipped in for a 2 ONLY ON THE BLOODY 2’S HOLE and won the jackpot £200, plus the normal £5!

Summer League Round 7 - "It's getting tickly now. Squeaky bum time, I call it."
This Sunday sees the Oakies head to Walmersley Golf Club for round 7 of 8 for this seasons Summer League. With still a few players capable of taking top spot, nerves will be tested as every shot matters. The Captain's Challenge continues, so count your putts.
In addition, there's a couple of match play games to play, as Vinny & Dave play for 3rd place and Tony & Stu battle it out for 5th.

Summer League Round 6 - To paraphrase Oscar Hammerstein II, “golf on through the wind, golf on through rain, though your dreams (and ball) be tossed and blown…”. Disley Golf Club became Drizzly Golf Club as the weather made it tough going in the hills overlooking south Manchester. I half expected to find Heathcliffe & Kathy rolling in green behind the 8th tee!
Anyway, enough of the weather and into the golf. In first place with a nett 70 was Tony Littler, beating Trevor Orrell by 6 shots and surely bringing his handicap so far down it could chat to Maggie Thatcher. Les Davenport had the only 2 holing out for Eagle on the 8th, and Paul Robinson took the sweep. Nobody won Nearest The Pin as the Green was the size of a bin lid with a 30mph cross wind.
In the match play Trev beat Dave Birchall 3&2 and Les beat Vinny Brady 2Up, whilst in the Shaw-Off wooden spoon match, Jimmy beat Paul 7&5.
See you next week when hopefully some have learned their left from their right.

Sorry for the delay, just been basking in the glory of defeating all comers with 37 points on The Brabazon course at The Belfry.
Back in Oakies land, Darwen Golf Club hosted the LLG Trophy major and the winner was Tony Littler with 34pts with Les Davenport in runner up. Nearest to the pin was Paul Robinson and Paul Shaw shone through to win the sweep.
We’re back on the road this week (Sun 26th) at Disley Golf Club (home of Paul Shaw’s famous 90) for a regular round of Summer League. However the matchplay semi finals will also take place as follows:
Trevor Orrell vs Dave Birchall
Les Davenport vs Vinnie Brady

🚨 MAJOR ALERT! 🚨 Our fourth Major of the season has arrived. The LLG (Low, Left and Gone?) Trophy will take place at Darwen Golf Club. Tony Littler is the defending champion, but with a favourable weather forecast some of the longer holes will be reachable for the shorter hitters, opening up the field for many players to shoot good scores and put themselves in contention before Vinny comes in with his 50 points off 26 shots. Good luck Gents, I’ll be at The Belfry losing 600 balls on the Brab.
Majors are Stableford comps and the captains challenge is postponed.
