I was at Poole ABC for about 20 years from the early 90s. Boxer and then coach. Back then I never had an ambition to open my own gym. Or to even teach boxing full time. That was way beyond anything you could seriously think about back then.
I think my ambition was to somehow not have to do the factory job I was in, for the rest of my working life. But knew the chances of escaping that job were very slim.
But at the end of 2014, 4 months after giving up alcohol, I quit my factory job to go full time teaching boxing.
I was so happy to be out of that factory job, to be permanently sober, and to be teaching boxing full time, that I felt I'd achieved way more than i could ever have expected.
But I didn't think about opening a gym. I felt like I already had a dream job, and I wouldn't know the 1st thing about running a business.
It's amazing how things work out. The ups and downs along the way. The things you remember that helped you succeed, and the things that made you struggle.
I'm 54 in a few weeks. 6 years off of 60 😮
And still have days where I wonder how life would have worked out if I hadn't stopped drinking. And I still remember how hard it was to stop. Makes you quite proud when you remember how you beat an addiction. Even after all this time.
