Scholars and philosophers have linked the breath to thought for many thousands of years. Some of the early Upanishads, philosophical Sanskrit texts from Hinduism’s oldest scriptures, directly coupled stability of the mind to stability of the breath. And in the West, this connection was made explicit in Homeric epics, The Iliad and The Odyssey, as Ancient Greeks thought the lungs were the seat of thought, emotion, and deliberation.

Modern cognitive scientists have identified still more explicit links, finding that the breath can have profound impacts on memory, attention to sensory signals, and sensitivity to emotions such as anxiety. But new research suggests the relationship between breath and thought may be even more intimate and subtle than scientists had thought. A team of scientists found that the electrical signaling deep in the limbic and cortical parts of the brain may track the specific shape of each breath on a millisecond basis, like a fingerprint. They published their results in the Journal of Neuroscience.

The new work combines big questions from cognitive science, such as the nature of thought, with the methods of data science, says Bradley Voytek, coauthor of the study and chair of the University of California, San Diego, cognitive science department. “One of the cornerstones of cognitive science is that we’re not just brains in a vat,” says Voytek. “We’re not just transistors, like little binary signaling units. We are embodied. Our brains exist in a body that evolved in this complicated world that obeys certain laws of physics, and that embodiment affects our cognition.” What data science brings to the work is the perspective that the world is rich with signals, and everything is data that can be measured, including temporal variations in the breath.

Eena Kosik-Rose, a UC San Diego PhD student in the Department of Cognitive Science, led the study, together with Voytek, as well as scientists from Northwestern University, the George Washington University School of Medicine, the University of Iowa, and Children’s National Hospital.

Nautilus spoke with Voytek about what features of the breath they measured, why they worked with epilepsy patients, and how much of our breathing is under our conscious control.

It has been a busy and chaos making weekend in our house - ripping out our old kitchen ready for the new Ikea one to be fitted this coming week. It will be so nice when done but unpleasant at the moment!
It is the last week of yoga on Tuesday and Friday and there are 2 Mondays left before I go walking in Germany. If you have missed a class, you are very welcome to come to 2 classes this week or join the Monday class on 28th Sept. I have planned a lovely class built around the theme of connecting to the vastness and the mystery of the heart. Can we stay in connection with this when life is moving through us and bringing about change?

I will record the next months home practice package this week - anyone is very welcome to join or give this a go for a month. If anyone would like me to record a specific chair yoga physical practice video this is also possible. Do ask me if you would like to.

There are 4 spaces left on the yoga and gong bath morning on 10th Oct at Wickham Hall - options for chair and mat yoga practitioners. It will be a restorative and relaxing morning.

I still have a couple of spaces for massage or reflexology this Thursday but based at the Riverside centre (due to the kitchen fitting) - these are at 11am or 12.30pm.

The new chair yoga class will be starting on 15th Oct at Wickham Hall 11 - 12.
Tuesday evenings will be moving to Wickham Hall from 1st December - exciting!

Wishing you all well and thank you so much for your support as always ###

Hope you have had as good a weekend as possible. It has been strange but quite nice for me as dropped Maddy off to university halls yesterday and celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary. All significant markers of the passing of time and the inevitability of change.
This week in yoga we will be exploring stillness through movement. The doorway to awareness is available through direct experience of the body, the breath and the energy body. We can embrace human experience and find the sacred in everyday life.
I have space for reflexology, massage or reiki on Thursday morning this week and the following week (due to our kitchen being fitted) I have booked a room for therapies at the Riverside Centre on Thursday 24th . I have an 11am slot and a 12.30pm slot available on that day.
I attach flyers for the Yoga and gong bath morning on 10th Oct. The goal of this morning is deep relaxation. Mags provides comfy air beds for the gong bath following gentle yoga, and the menopause yoga session on 7th November.
Please feel free to ask me any questions about those mornings and regarding the retreat in April next year.

Thank you all so much for your support over the summer. We are having the week off this week.
The September block of yoga starts next Monday at Wickham Hall.
The Monday class is a very accessible class, with plenty of options for anyone who would benefit from using a chair, while still being suitable for those practising mat-based yoga.
Tomorrow sees the launch of the Home Practice Package. Do let me know if you would like to sign up or simply have a go at this new option for practising in the comfort of your own home.
Throughout September, we will be exploring the theme of Embracing Change Whilst Keeping the Heart Open. I will be weaving this theme around some of the beautiful meditations from the Radiance Sutras, with soft, flowing postures that move gently with the breath. We will explore how we can meet change with openness, curiosity and compassion, while remaining connected to a sense of steadiness within.
