Phoenix crowned champions with dominant 10-wicket victory! 🏆🔥

Bradford Phoenix were crowned Rizues T20 Cup champions for the second time with a thoroughly dominant 10-wicket victory over the defending champions, Apperley Bridge, at Park Avenue.

The win capped off a remarkable campaign in which Phoenix remained unbeaten throughout the entire competition – a testament to the team's consistency, depth, and fighting spirit.

After Apperley Bridge won the toss and elected to bat, the holders got off to a quick start, racing to 22/0 after just 2 overs. But a smart piece of fielding from Najeeb Ahmadzai brought about the first breakthrough, running out Mohammad Mustafa Shirzad (6) in the third over. The pressure was maintained immediately as Atzaz Kazmi produced a stunning catch at point to remove the dangerous Bridge opener Anayat Ullah Khan (8) for a low score off the bowling of Syed Abubakar (1/39).

Phoenix's spin duo of Hasan Shabir (1/17 from 4 overs) and Syed Imran (1/10 from 4 overs) then took control, bowling economical spells to apply the brakes. Zia Ur Rahman Orakhil (3/25) was the pick of the bowlers, while Waseem Usman (1/28) also chipped in with a wicket. The fielding throughout was outstanding, with Zareen Shan taking two excellent catches to keep the pressure on. Muhammad Saeed (38) offered some resistance for Apperley Bridge, but a further run out from Rafaqat Ali at the back end of the innings ensured Phoenix restricted the holders to 126/9 from 20 overs – a total that always looked below par on a decent surface.

In reply, Phoenix made light work of the chase, reaching the target in just 12.1 overs without losing a wicket. Majid Ali (51 off 28, 9 fours, 1 six) produced a blistering knock before retiring not out, while Muhammad Nadeem (21 off 33)* and Atzaz Kazmi (22 off 12, 2 fours, 1 six)* saw Phoenix home in emphatic fashion.

After the match, a large contingent of Phoenix squad players gathered for the presentation ceremony, where skipper Rafaqat Ali was presented with the Rizues T20 Cup and a prize cheque of £1,500. The squad were in a jubilant and celebratory mood as they lifted the trophy – a fitting reward for an unbeaten campaign.

The team return to league action next weekend before turning their attention to another cup final – the Sir James Roberts Cup final against Omars. A second trophy of the season is now within reach.

A mixed weekend for Phoenix – the 1st XI produced a crucial 2-wicket victory over Bradford Mavericks, while the 2nd XI were undone by a low-scoring defeat at home to Takari.

Phoenix secured a two-wicket victory over Bradford Mavericks in a tight league encounter, with Majid Ali producing a match-winning unbeaten 61 to guide his side home in a nervy chase.

Bowling first, after Mavericks won the toss and elected to bat, Phoenix were made to work hard in the field. Rahul Agrawal (41 off 78) and Adil Shaikh (45 off 21) were the main contributors for the hosts, but Syed Abubakar (5/35 from 9 overs) proved the difference with a devastating five-wicket haul. Zia Ur Rahman Orakhil (2/33) and Syed Imran (2/33) provided valuable support as Mavericks were bowled out for 197 in 32 overs.

In reply, Phoenix's chase got off to a shaky start, losing early wickets to slip to 23/3 and then 64/4. Atzaz Kazmi (38 off 35, 5 fours, 2 sixes) provided a brief spark, but it was the 92-run partnership between Majid Ali (61 off 63, 7 fours, 1 six)* and Rafaqat Ali (44 off 43, 5 fours, 2 sixes) that turned the game. The pair batted with composure and aggression, steadying the ship and bringing Phoenix to the brink of victory.

A late wobble saw three quick wickets fall, but Majid held his nerve to see Phoenix home with 6 overs to spare.

A challenging afternoon for the 2nd XI, who struggled to post a competitive total on a tricky surface.

Batting first, Phoenix were bowled out for just 82 in 31.2 overs. Only Muhammad Usman Mirza (20 off 46) and Tamraz Bhai (16 off 50)* offered any real resistance as Takari's bowlers kept things tight throughout. Omar Hayat (4/11) and Nadeem Ahmad (3/8) did the damage for the visitors.

In reply, Takari's chase got off to a shaky start as they slipped to 13/4, with Asad Zaman (2/17) and Abdul Wahid (2/22) making early breakthroughs. But Omar Hayat (38* off 26) and Awais Ahmed (23) then steadied the ship with a crucial partnership to guide Takari to victory. Despite a late couple of wickets from Muhammad Usman Mirza (2/7), Takari reached the target in 18 overs with 4 wickets in hand.

In a tense, high-stakes semi-final at Great Horton Church, Bradford Phoenix produced a thrilling comeback to defeat Bradford Mavericks by 12 runs and book their place in the Rizues T20 Cup Final.

Having won the toss and elected to bat first, Phoenix got off to a disastrous start, losing three wickets in the third over to leave them at 22/3 – soon to become 27/4 and then 45/5 when skipper Rafaqat Ali was dismissed in the 7th over.

But then came the fightback. Zareen Shan (49 off 47, 5 fours) and Hasan Shabir (19 off 21) shared a resilient 48-run stand to rebuild the innings. Hasan holed out to long-off off the economical Usman Munir (2 for 22), who then snared the dangerous Waseem Usman the very next ball to leave Phoenix at 93/7.

Shan continued to bat fluently and was joined by Najeeb Ahmadzai (28 off 22, 4 fours, 1 six) as the pair put on a 46-run partnership for the 8th wicket. Shan fell short of a deserved half-century, dismissed on 49 when attempting a big shot. Najeeb then guided Phoenix to a fighting 155/9 – an excellent recovery that gave the bowlers something to defend.

In reply, Mavericks got off to a flyer, racing to 25/0 after 2 overs as the Phoenix opening bowlers strayed in their lines. Skipper Rafa turned to spin in the 4th over, and it brought about the first breakthrough as Rahul Agrawal was dismissed LBW from the bowling of Zareen Shan (1/32) .

Usman Munir (34 off 29) and Mohammed Alqamah (25 off 29) continued to tick the strike over, and Mavericks looked well set at 76/1 after 10 overs. But a brilliant direct hit from Atzaz Kazmi ran out Alqamah, breaking the partnership that was threatening to take the game away.

In the 13th over, Rafa turned to strike bowler Syed Abubakar and he duly delivered with a double-wicket blow – firstly taking the key wicket of Usman Munir and then expertly bowling Waqas Khan for no score two deliveries later. That double strike left Mavericks on 100/5 after 13 overs with 56 runs still needed – and the momentum had firmly turned in Phoenix's favour.

Young gun Zia Ur Rahman Orakhil (2/18 from 4 overs) was introduced into the attack in the 14th over and bowled a stellar spell, picking up two key wickets. Abubakar finished with 3/29, while the spinners Syed Imran (1/22) and Waseem Usman (1/35) also chipped in.

With wickets falling at regular intervals, Mavericks were left needing 32 runs off the last 2 overs. Thirteen runs were scored off the 19th over, leaving 19 required off the final over – but Zia held his nerve, conceding just 6 runs to secure a memorable 12-run win.

In their biggest game of the season to date, Bradford Phoenix produced an outstanding all-round performance to comprehensively beat defending champions Apperley Bridge by 82 runs at Rawdon Meadows and book their place in the Sir James Roberts Cup Final.

Apperley Bridge won the toss and elected to field – a decision they would quickly come to regret as Phoenix's batters took full advantage of a good surface.

Phoenix posted an imposing 276/5 from 40 overs – their highest total of the season – built around a brilliant unbeaten 75 from Hasan Shabir and valuable contributions from the entire top order.

Openers Rafaqat Ali (43 off 41, 7 fours, 1 six) and Waseem Usman (30 off 27, 4 fours, 1 six) got Phoenix off to a flying start with a 69-run opening stand. Atzaz Kazmi (33 off 50) and Syed Abubakar (18 off 14) kept the momentum going before Hasan took centre stage.

Hasan Shabir (75* off 64, 6 fours, 3 sixes) played a masterful innings, combining elegant stroke-play with intelligent rotation of the strike. He shared a crucial 63-run partnership with Zareen Shan, who was fluent in scoring 35 off 28 (2 fours, 1 six), and an unbeaten 69-run stand with Majid Ali (29 off 16, 2 fours, 2 sixes)*, who provided a blistering finish to propel Phoenix to a formidable total.

In reply, Apperley Bridge's chase never quite got going. After the early loss of both openers inside the first five overs, the Bridge innings showed brief signs of recovery. Mohammad Mustafa Shirzad (13) played some good shots before he holed out to long-on with Majid Ali taking a sharp catch to make it 42/3 inside the powerplay.

A patient 45-run stand between Muhammad Qasim (17) and Muhammad Saeed (51 off 55) then steadied the ship for the holders, but it was brought to an end by a brilliant piece of fielding from Majid Ali, who ran out Qasim with a direct hit from within the circle. At 87/4, Apperley Bridge were relying on their talismanic batsman Saeed to guide the chase.

Saeed looked in good touch, building a 40-run partnership with Mohammed Abid (28) to keep Bridge in the contest. But Jonaid Khan struck after the drinks break, dismissing Saeed – Bridge's hopes effectively vanishing with their key man's wicket. Jonaid struck again the very next ball, trapping Nizam Shah for a first-ball duck, leaving Bridge reeling at 127/6.

Syed Abubakar (5/44 from 8.4 overs) then returned to clean up the tail, wrapping up the innings with his fifth wicket as Apperley Bridge were bowled out for 194 in 29.4 overs. The seasoned Asim Khan (2/48 from 10 overs) had earlier provided control and discipline with the new ball, while Jonaid (2/36) finished with two crucial wickets.

A late cameo from Shoaib Aseel (31* off 11) added some respectability, but the result was never in doubt once the wickets began to tumble.

A perfect weekend for Phoenix as both the 1st and 2nd XI delivered victories to keep their seasons firmly on track.

The 1st XI returned to winning ways in the league with a hard-fought 45-run victory over Bradford Mavericks at Woodhall Park.

Batting first, Phoenix posted a competitive 184/9 from 40 overs, with contributions spread throughout the order. Syed Abubakar (28 off 46) , Rafaqat Ali (21 off 44) and Zareen Shan (20 off 14) all made starts, while debutant Muhammad Kashif (27 off 26) provided valuable late impetus alongside Muhammad Asim Khan (14*) who saw Phoenix through to the end of the innings.

In the second innings Phoenix produced a superb bowling display to bowl Mavericks out for 139 in 31.2 overs. Syed Abubakar (7/38 from 10 overs) was the star of the show, producing a devastating spell that ripped through the Mavericks top and middle order. The speedster bowled with verve and raw pace which was too much for the Mavericks batters to handle. Naresh Patel (2/22) provided excellent support, while Jonaid Khan (1/26), Muhammad Asim Khan (0/20 from 6 overs) and Wasim Usman (0 for 20 from 5 overs) kept things tight. Adil Shaikh (47) offered some resistance for Mavericks, but the total was always out of reach of the visitors after Abubakar's damaging opening spell.

The 2nd XI secured a hard-fought 3-wicket victory away at Awan in a low-scoring affair.

Bowling first, Phoenix skittled out Awan for just 88 in 21.4 overs. Muhammad Usman Mirza (4/9 from 5.4 overs) produced a clinical spell, while Bilal Hussain (3/26) and Nitesh Lad (2/18) provided excellent support. Zahid Hussain (20*) was the only Awan batter to offer any real resistance.

In reply Phoenix made heavy weather of the chase but eventually got over the line. Skipper Kamran Khaliq (27 off 30) lead the way and provided a solid start, while Nitesh Lad (17) and Ritesh Patel (18*) steadied the innings after a mid-order wobble. Shahid Khalid (5/27) kept Awan in the game, but Phoenix held their nerve to reach the target with 5 balls to spare. The win keeps the team top of group B1.
