Hasan Shabir (3/7 from 3 overs) was the standout with the ball, bowling with control and precision. The 1st XI made light work of Awan, producing a ruthless display to secure a convincing win.

Bowling first, Phoenix ripped through the Awan batting line-up, dismissing them for just 40 in 14.2 overs.

Amjad Ali was the star with the ball, returning incredible figures of 4 for 4 from 5 overs – a spell of precision and control that broke the back of the innings.

The chase was a formality. Phoenix knocked off the required runs in just 5.3 overs, finishing on 43 without loss (Shan 20*, Atzaz 16*) to seal a 10-wicket win.

Phoenix 2nd XI Lost by 28 runs (reduced to 30 overs)

A much tougher afternoon for the 2nd XI, who fell short in their match with Greenfield at Coach Road.

Batting first, Greenfield posted a daunting 250/7 from their 30 overs. Adeel Ahmed (70) and Hassan Sultan (70) did the damage with aggressive knocks. Naresh Patel (3/32) was the pick of the Phoenix bowlers, while Asad Zaman (2/67) and Tamrez Bhai (2/66) also chipped in.

In reply, Phoenix gave it a real go. Vraj Patel (45 off 28, 5 sixes) provided a spark in the middle order, while Tamraz Bhai (38 off 16, 3 fours, 4 sixes) and Bilal Hussain (22 off 15) kept the chase alive. Pritesh Patel (35) also contributed at the top.

Phoenix finished on 222 all out in 24.1 overs – a spirited effort that fell 28 runs short.

The Phoenix T20 XI made a winning start to their T20 campaign, though it was closer than we might have expected.

Put into bat first on a damp pitch after overnight rain, Phoenix posted 175/9. Majid Ali (35 off 33) provided a steady anchor at the top, while Hasan Shabir (27 off 24) kept the scoreboard moving. A late flurry from Waseem Usman (20 off 8 balls, 2 sixes) gave the total some valuable extra runs.

In reply, Yorkshire Friends found batting easier as the pitch dried out. They looked well in the chase for long periods, but Phoenix bowlers kept striking at regular intervals. Syed Abubakar (2/18) bowled at rapid pace, picking up two early wickets. Asad Zaman (2/36) and Hasan Shabir (2/14) also chipped in with two wickets apiece, with Hasan also holding on to two good catches in the field.

The game came down to the final over with 7 runs needed. Hasan conceded a boundary off the first ball – then bowled five dot balls to secure a thrilling 2-run win!

Let's get behind the lads for our first taste of T20 cricket in 2026.

Phoenix 1st XI secure important 50-run win to maintain 100% start 🔥

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: Opting to bat first, Phoenix made a steady start with debutant Atzaz Kazmi (21 off 28) showing glimpses of classy strokeplay. But a double wicket setback was followed by things turning worse – 40/2 quickly became 40/5 thanks to some good bowling and rash shot selection from the middle order.

At 50/6, things looked bleak. Then came a match-defining partnership.

𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐢𝐝 𝐀𝐥𝐢 (𝟔𝟕 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝟔𝟕) and 𝐃𝐢𝐥 𝐍𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐳 (𝟒𝟔 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝟔𝟔) produced a brilliant recovery stand of 88 runs for the 7th wicket. The pair batted beautifully, mixing solid defence with careful strokeplay, rotating the strike and running well between the wickets. Majid hit 10 boundaries including cracking cut shots and on-drives, while Dil Nawaz played some crisp straight drives on his way to 46 with 4 boundaries.

At 138/6, Dil Nawaz was adjudged LBW, and Majid followed soon after – but their heroics had already helped Phoenix rescue the innings and post 154 in 36.2 overs.

𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: Abubakar Shah was in blistering form with the ball, ripping through the Hallfield top order by taking 4 quick wickets in his opening spell to reduce the visitors to 25/5 inside the first 10 overs. His pace and aggression proved too much on a hard, dry surface. He was ably assisted by Amjad Ali, who delivered a disciplined opening spell of 6 overs, finishing with 1 for 22.

Spin king Ali Imran replaced Abubakar and duly delivered with 2 wickets, producing a good spell of 7 overs (2 for 25) as Hallfield slipped to 64/7.

Nabeel Butt (55 off 60) was the only Hallfield batter able to demonstrate any attacking strokeplay – although he was given multiple lives as Phoenix fielders spilled several catches. He and Usman Khan (13) added 37 for the 8th wicket to help Hallfield recover to 101.

But Wasim Usman (2 for 8 ) and 𝐀𝐛𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐡 – returning to finish with outstanding figures of 𝟓 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝟏𝟕 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟔 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 – wrapped up the Hallfield innings for 104 all out in 25.2 overs.

It was a comfortable win in the end by 50 runs but there is still plenty of room for improvement for the 1st XI especially in the batting department.

After abandoned games last weekend, both the First XI and Second XI entered their respective group stage opening matches with optimism – and duly delivered with excellent wins. But they didn't come easy!

The First XI travelled to Yorkshire Friends – a venue where they had already tasted league victory on the opening weekend of the season – and once again came out winners.

After being asked to bat first, openers Harish Manjunath (12 off 26) and Rafa Ali (31 off 34) put on a steady 25 until Harish was dismissed LBW. Abubakar Shah then produced a classy, fluent innings of 53 off 42 balls, first sharing a 41-run second-wicket stand with Rafa and then a 43-run partnership with Hasan Shabir (19 off 24).

After drinks, Phoenix slipped from 109/2 to 109/4 following two wickets in two balls from Rizwan Hameed (3 for 26). Abubakar himself departed with the score on 121/5. Wickets kept falling regularly thereafter, and Phoenix were bowled out for 161 off 30.3 overs – thankful to Ali Imran (24 off 13) for some l***y blows towards the end.

With a below-par score, the bowlers were tasked with taking early wickets – and they duly delivered.

Bowling highlights:
💥 Abubakar Shah – 5/30 off 6 overs
💥 Ali Imran – 4/25 off 10 overs

Yorkshire Friends struggled to build any real momentum throughout their innings as they were stifled by some disciplined bowling and fielding from Phoenix. A final-wicket stand between Usman Ali (46 off 49) and Faraz Dar (9* off 36) took the score from 63/9 to 117 all out in 30.4 overs – still 44 runs short of the Phoenix total.

The 2nd XI hosted Apperley Bridge 2nd XI at Woodhall and produced a resounding comeback win in style against a good side.

Batting first (after winning the toss), Phoenix got off to a terrible start, losing both openers with just 2 runs on the board. Skipper Kamran Khaliq (10 off 28) and Wali Ullah (13 off 41) dug in without really moving the scoreboard, before another quick double-wicket loss saw the score at 22/4. Regular wickets then saw the team reeling at 45/8.

Then came the fightback.

A brilliant rearguard stand of 61 for the 9th wicket between Usman Mirza (51 off 79) and Sajansinh Kathwadia (21 off 37), followed by further runs from Usman with Naresh Patel (5* off 25), helped Phoenix reach 133 all out in 39.2 overs. Parvez Sikdar finished with impressive figures of 4/27 off his 10 overs for the visitors.

It was a resilient, battling display by the Phoenix tail – and it served as the perfect catalyst for a purring bowling performance in the second innings.

All of the Phoenix bowlers produced outstanding spells as Apperley Bridge were torn apart in their chase, dismissed for 62 in 23.1 overs.

Bowling highlights:
💥 Naresh Patel – 4/16 off 7 overs
💥 Tamrez Khan – 3/12 off 6 overs
💥 Sajansinh Kathwadia – 2/22 off 5 overs (including two top-order wickets)

It was a resounding comeback performance that demonstrated the resilience and togetherness of a strong group of players in the Phoenix 2nd team.
