Consistent repetition through individual and small group work is one of the biggest factors in player development.
Matches are brilliant — players love them, parents enjoy watching, and they’re important for learning decision making, movement and game understanding.
When players finish training with a game for the last 15 minutes, it’s great to see them trying to put into practice what they’ve been learning technically throughout the session. But realistically, how many touches do they actually get in those 15 minutes?
Maybe around 30 touches if they’re lucky.
Perhaps 15 of those are passes, with the rest being dribbles or running with the ball.
In Sunday matches, the average player in 5v5 or 7v7 football may only have around 25–30 touches during the game — and that’s usually one of the more dominant players.
In 9v9 and 11v11 football, it’s often even less.
That’s why individual practice and small group sessions are so important. This is where players can really increase their repetition levels and “catch up” on touches throughout the week.
In a focused 45-minute technical session working in small groups, players can easily achieve anywhere between 500–1000 touches depending on their age, intensity and ability level.
Even working alone at home can give a player hundreds, sometimes thousands, of quality touches in a short period of time.
Quite simply, players improve through repetition.
The more quality touches they get on the ball, the more comfortable, confident and technically secure they become.
