How Yoga Therapy can help at multiple levels for whole person well-being
In 2022 review paper, How does yoga practice and therapy yield psychological benefits? A review and model of transdiagnostic processes, Alison Bennett argues that yoga practices target transdiagnostic psychological issues - and that the eight limbs offer a powerful framework for understanding how.
But what does transdiagnostic mean in psychology?
Rather than focusing only on a particular diagnosis, a transdiagnostic approach looks at experiences shared across many mental health conditions, such as low mood, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, pain, loneliness or difficulties with attention.
For yoga therapists, this supports a more person-centred approach. Instead of asking only whether yoga helps with depression, for example, we might consider how it supports low mood, connection, regulation, purpose and physical wellbeing.
Bennett’s model links the eight limbs of yoga with psychological change:
Yama: trust, respect and therapeutic safety
Niyama: self-awareness and reflection
Asana: body awareness and stress reduction
Pranayama: breath and emotional regulation
Pratyahara: turning attention inward
Dharana: concentration and attention training
Dhyana: meditation and mindful awareness
Samadhi: meaning, connection and self-realisation
This helps psychological professionals understand the broad potential of yoga therapy across different diagnoses and presentations.
Heather Mason has also been teaching this relationship between the eight limbs and psychological change for many years.
