After a week off, it was a return to league action for the boys as we welcomed Mearns FC to Wards. The short break seemed to have made a small dent in our momentum, as we struggled to get going for a moment. But the gears would eventually start turning, and Blair Henderson continued his inspired form in his new role by opening the scoring with a cool finish from close range. It wasn’t the most thrilling of football matches up to this point, with the stoppage to pick up dog poo being one of the more interesting moments to note down. Seemingly galvanised from the adrenaline inducing stoppage, Nova would soon find a second goal. A fluid move culminated in nice one touch football, with Henderson teeing up Ethan Wood for a lovely weighted pass through to Kenny Barber, who made no mistake in the 1v1. The boys were fully in control now, and outside of one half chance for the visitors that was an easy low down save for Finno, we saw the first period out comfortably.

The dominance continued into the second half, and the excitement was turned up with some strong challenges being put in from both sides. Nova came inches close to a third goal when Baba struck the post, but the third soon came via Sam Rogerson, who had not long entered the pitch for his debut. I’m sure it was a good goal, I wouldn’t know because the camera was staring at Finno. Mearns came close to pulling one back with their best chance so far, a thunderous shot smacked off the crossbar and fell to another attacker for a second effort, which was deflected off the top of the head of a Nova defender and over for a corner. Appearing from the bench for the second game running, Ethan Chandler was looking to show management that the bench is no place for him. After one effort on target was saved by the keeper, Chandler would eventually make it two goals in as many games, finding himself at the end of Nova’s trademark “throw it to either Leddy or Blair’s head and see what happens” set piece meta. Seeing our opponents getting tired, the boys looked for another goal or two. Aidan Southam came close to a fifth shortly before time but put the ball just wide of the post.

Another performance to be very pleased with, and yet another clean sheet for Finno that was helped by an outstanding defensive display from Baba, Alfie McGarry, Greg Inglis, Dave Lamb and our debuting man of the match Ethan Dalgarno. The attention now turns to a trip to Montrose next week to face Anchor (I think).
