Breconβs Bright Start Undone by Builth Fightback
The Stags hosted their first game of the 2026/27 season last night, with Builth Wells FC Reserves the visitors.
The away side had recruited strongly in the off season, and so The Stags were well aware that this would be one of the tougher fixtures on the calendar.
Brecon started strong though, playing some excellent football, and looking the better side for long periods of play throughout the first half.
With 15 minutes gone, Brecon found the lead that their start deserved, when Builth didnβt deal with a whipped corner from clever wide midfielder Tom Morgan, midfield dynamo Charlie Mills was there to volley home from 12 yards to send The Stags one up.
And it wasnβt long before Brecon were celebrating again, when 10 minutes later, yet another corner from Tom Morgan met the run of agile winger Nyle Slade to slam home through a crowd of Builth defenders.
A big blow for The Stags was captain Obo Edwards having to limp from the pitch shortly after, when an innocent clash with a Builth attacker cut deeply into the defenderβs shin, forcing the management team into an early substitution.
And a bigger blow came just before half time, with Builth finding themselves a goal against the run of play, with a low cross from the far side met the run of Christopher Bartholomew, who took his goal well to give the visitors hope as they went into the break.
HT: Brecon FC 2-1 Builth Wells FC Reserves
With heads clearly having dropped at the sight of their own net rippling, the management team urged calm in the halftime team talk, making it clear that for the majority of the first half, Brecon had been the better side, and simply needed to continue that to get the three points that their performance thus far had deserved.
But The Stags were never truly able to hit those heights again in the second half. Chances were carved, most notably for talented young striker Ralph Scanlon, making his debut for The Stags aged just 16, coming close on a number of occasions, with the Builth defenders or goalkeeper somehow always finding a way to stop the ball crossing the goal line, much to the frustration of the Brecon supporters.
Builth had begun to work their way back into the game since scoring their first before the break, and their second unfortunately came with just 9 minutes to go. When Owain Corbett was able to dance through a number of Brecon defenders, before slamming home from an angle to send the away side wild.
Brecon pushed for a response, but the damage had already been done, leaving The Stags frustrated at seeing two valuable points slip away.

Stags Edge Swifts in 2-1 win
Yesterday, Brecon FC travelled up to Rhayader for what they know is always a tough game for any club at this league. St Harmon away.
Buoyed by an excellent pre season, and boasting several new signings, including Scott Warren (who kindly offered to go between the sticks in his debut, a huge and appreciated gesture!), Nyle Slade, George Smith, and Harry Smith, The Stags made the journey full of confidence.
And it only took 7 minutes for one of those new signings to make an impact. With the quick feet and thinking of attacking midfielder Nyle Slade, making his return debut, played a short pass to imposing centre forward Owain Powell-Jones on the edge of the box, who in turn played it first time around the defender to put Slade 1v1 with the St Harmon keeper, who could do nothing about the finish.
And just four minutes later, The Stags struck again. Some good play down the right hand side saw intelligent winger Tom Morgan lay the ball back to flying fullback Morgan Preece, who calmly took a touch, before delivering an inch perfect ball onto the head of tricky winger Aaron Mills, who had found himself some space between two St Harmon defenders to nod home from 6 yards out with a smart finish.
Brecon continued to play good football throughout the half, but struggled to carve out any further clear opportunities, despite two free kicks, one from clever midfielder Charlie Mills, and another from Nyle Slade, both hitting the St Harmon post, with the latter running across the Home teams goal line before being cleared away.
And it was St Harmon who got one back on the stroke of half time, when Daniel Powell flighted in a free kick, only to overshot and see his cross freakishly drop under the Brecon FC bar.
Half time: St Harmon FC 1-2 Brecon FC
The second half again saw Brecon keep the ball in the St Harmon half for long periods of the game, but yet again unable to find the back of the net. A few good chances failing to be converted, as they pushed to kill off the game.
But credit to St Harmon, they stood strong, defended well, and were able to prevent The Stags from finding the goal to ease their nerves, leading to a tense finish.
Thankfully, the boys were able to hold on, and come away from their first game of the season with a well earned three points!

OSIAN 'MILKY' DAVIES IS A STAG!!!
Please join us in welcoming Osian Milky Davies to Brecon FC!
Osian joined us toward the end of pre-season, but his impact was immediate! So we wanted to make this one happen as soon as possible!
A hard working, physical centre forward who we have no doubt will cause headaches for MWLS defences this season! π¦πππ€
