*UPDATE*
All competitions held during May cancelled.
IMPORTANT: Rescheduling of Showjumping Championship & BS Competition (16th–17th May)
Dear Competitors,
Following the recent Equine Influenza outbreak, Bridgend College Equine Events has made the difficult decision to cancel our upcoming Showjumping Championship and British Showjumping competition scheduled for next weekend, the 16th and 17th of May.
Reason for Decision
We have reached this conclusion after carefully discussing potential barriers with competitors and evaluating the risks involved. Given the high risk of transmission and the significant impact the outbreak is having on entry numbers, we believe postponing these events is the most responsible course of action.
Our priority is to protect our resident horses and the wider equine community, allowing everyone the necessary time to monitor their horses’ health and ensure all vaccinations are fully up to date. To clarify, there are no symptomatic cases at the college; this is a proactive measure to help reduce the spread of the virus.
Entry Refunds and Transfers
Once a new date for the Championship and BS competition has been confirmed, we will issue a finalised update.
Regarding your current entries:
Transfers: Your entry can be automatically transferred to the new rescheduled date.
Refunds: Anyone wishing to receive a full refund may request one by contacting the Equine Department.
Facility Hires
Please note that individual and small-group facility hires will continue to go ahead as planned, as the significantly smaller numbers allow for more controlled biosecurity. However, we must reiterate that all hires are now required to submit vaccination records to [email protected] prior to arrival. Spot checks will be conducted.
Affected Yards: Any individual from a yard that has a confirmed case of Equine Influenza, or any horse showing symptoms, must not attend our site under any circumstances. We trust our competitors to act responsibly to help contain the outbreak.
Moving Forward
We are monitoring official Equine Influenza updates closely and will keep you informed regarding any future events. We apologise for the disappointment and any inconvenience this may cause, and we thank you for your continued support in keeping our horses safe.
Kind regards,
Bridgend College Equine Events

📢 Important Update: Equine Influenza Precautions & Entry Protocols
In light of the recent equine flu outbreak, we are taking proactive steps to maintain a biosecure environment at our upcoming competitions.
📋 Requirements for This Weekend
To safeguard all participants, no horses may be unloaded until their documentation has been verified. All competitors are required to present:
- A valid Horse Passport
- Up-to-date Vaccination Records (compliant with current competition standards)
To speed up your arrival you can email clear images of your passport and vaccination pages to [email protected] prior to your arrival. This will allow our team to pre-verify your horse and reduce waiting times at the gate.
Horses MUST have had their initial TWO vaccinations to attend any event at our facility. Subsequent annual boosters are required within 12 months. Horses must have received their last vaccination at least 7 days before.
🗓️ Future Entries & Horse Monkey
Moving forward, to streamline our biosecurity checks, all vaccination records must be submitted digitally at the time of entry via Horse Monkey. This will become a mandatory requirement for all future applications.
🩺 Clinical Signs to Watch For
We strongly encourage all horse owners and yard managers to remain vigilant and monitor horses closely for signs of illness. Common clinical signs include:
-A dry, harsh cough
-Nasal discharge
-Fever (re**al temperature above 38.5°C)
-Lethargy or reduced performance
In some cases, signs may initially be mild, so regular monitoring - particularly twice daily temperature checking can help detect early infection.
Important: If your horse is showing any symptoms, or if they have been in contact with a horse suspected of having flu, please stay home and contact your veterinary surgeon.
Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us keep our equine athletes safe. We look forward to welcoming you to a successful and secure weekend of competition.
