Still in the midst of our 25 year celebrations and with the chill definitely in the air, our next Hero Product is very timely , our Down Duvets. Lightweight yet beautifully insulating, they just invite cosy sleep but maintain a comfortable sleep temperature. The down works by trapping tiny pockets of air within the fluffy clusters and this is warmed by and retains your own body heat. With a fine cotton cover it is breathable and allows the ‘loft’ or plumpness. Always invest in the best quality you can, look for traceable fillings and check the down mixtures. Always have pure cotton cover and remember to air them, before you pack away for next summer.

We’ve been a little quiet during the holiday month of August but now we’re back. While we are still in the middle of our celebratory year here is a new product hero. Stanhope Stanhope bedlinen is one of the defining pieces of our Dormitory collection. A quiet elegance using a traditional technique which has been used for centuries. Made from our signature fine percale cotton and finished with three rows of fine hemstitching detail. Guided by hand by our expert machinists the detailing gives a balance between simplicity and craftsmanship. Stanhope embodies our belief that true luxury is found in the quality of materials, the skill of the maker and the details that reveal themselves over time.

A new delivery of handmade lidded laundry baskets have just arrived from Ghana. We just adore the colours and the workmanship. The grass they are made of Veta Vera grows naturally in central Ghana. The material is dried and transported to the traditional weaving area of Bolga. Each straw is split and then twisted back together to increase its strength. Then dyed in bunches by hand. Building from the base these baskets and their lids take between 3 to 5 days to make. Bolgatanga , know as Bolga is in an area where the soil’s fertility is low , so basket weaving supplements the agricultural income. More details of the baskets available can be found on our website.

We’ve always been about detail, especially when it has a historical textile resonance. That’s why we use Dorset buttons on all our nightwear and bedlinen. Durable and practical, resilient to ironing, the buttons are made with a metal ring with cotton threads wrapped and stitched around it. The buttons were first made in Shaftesbury, Dorset in the 1640’s and the ring was originally made of sheep’s horn and fabric wrapped round the ring and stitched down. In time thread started to be wrapped around in decorative patterns and the buttons became flatter and neater. By the end of the 1700’s , at their height of popularity, there were over 7,000 people making them in the Shaftesbury area. Mostly used for working shirts and underwear , their decline came with the arrival of the Industrial Revolution and machine made buttons. Today we have them made for us in the Czech Republic to our bespoke colours and designs .

With these exceptionally warm nights, it’s worth thinking about how to improve your sleep when you are feeling so hot. A fan helps, blinds down during the day , cold shower but also think about your bed itself. In order to regulate the bodies temperature it needs to sweat to cool itself down. If you have natural fibre sheets then the fibre absorb perspiration unlike synthetic fabrics and will automatically make you feel cooler. As well as a light weight simple cotton sheet on top think about cotton pillowcases and a fully cotton mattress protector .
