Day 5: a free day to explore what had yet been seen at our leisure, a number of the team headed up to Hiroshima Castle to see the 1958 reconstruction of the Mōri clan samurai fortress. Many sets of samurai armour within and some fascinating history.

Later on was round two of okonomiaki!

Day 4: More training today before the all Japan tournament this Sunday, final preparations to give us all the best opportunity to be the best we can be!

A boat tour around Hiroshima bay during golden hour as the sun set behind the mountainous horizon.

Day 3: An important stop on our trip to Hiroshima. The A-bomb dome and memorial museum, an important reminder to strive for peace.

Secondly a trip to Miyajima island the home of the Itsukushima shrine a bucket list stop for me personally.

On top of that a bucket list meal of Hiroshima’s local dish okonomiaki!

Day 2: clearing out the jet lag cobwebs with our first pre-tournament training, embracing the heat and thick humidity of Hiroshima.

Numbers handed out, more cuisine sampled.

Day One:

After a very early start, a 12-hour flight and faced with a full day of travel, the team was looking forward to taking things easy when we landed at Tokyo Haneda.

“RUUUUUUUUN!”

Julia Shihan’s voice boomed through the otherwise serene corridors of Terminal 1. We’d lost nearly three hours to long, ambling queues and now our flight to Hiroshima was leaving in little more than five minutes. Everybody started running.

Thankfully, we made it onboard just in time, arriving in Hiroshima before noon. Exhausted but in good spirits, we ate dinner in our hotel before collapsing in bed.

Taking things easy? So much for that!
