Keep an eye on the chaffinches this month.

Bramblings are arriving from Scandinavia and Russia to spend the winter here, and they’re easy to miss in a mixed flock. Look for an orange-buff breast, a white belly and, at this time of year, a yellow bill with a dark tip. When they fly off, watch for the white rump.

They love beech woods, so wherever there’s a good crop of beech nuts, it’s worth a slow scan.

Right now, somewhere in a British garden, a hedgehog is doing something rather important — eating as much as it possibly can.

October is crunch time for the hedgehog. Before the cold sets in, they need to double their body weight to survive the months of hibernation ahead. Every worm, beetle and slug counts. Once the temperature drops consistently below 5°C, they’ll disappear into a nest of leaves and grass and won’t be seen again until spring.

Britain’s only spiny mammal, and one of its most beloved — yet hedgehog numbers have more than halved since the year 2000. Habitat loss, pesticide use and road casualties are all taking their toll.

If you have a garden, you can help. Leave a gap in your fence, reduce pesticide use and put out fresh water on cold nights. It costs nothing and it makes a real difference.
