As the first half of September disappears into our rear view mirror, we were struck this weekend by the huge change in the landscape wrought by the recent rain, clearly visible from the air. Two of our photos this week show Weston on the Green, home of Oxford GC, taken by one of our members just three weeks ago and the brown airfield was cunningly disguised by the parched wheat fields. And our second shows the radiant green hues around Brigstock taken yesterday after the rain had passed through. And Bob Rowland got to fly Charlie, an Abba tribute band musician yesterday. Happily, she wasn't singing "SOS" on final approach....

The start of Autumn was marked by a variety-packed few days at Lyveden. Unexpectedly good soaring conditions led to a pre-emptive Boomerang strike by Matthew Brown, who flew the wonky stick to our deadly foes at Upwood in the K8 but more importantly got back again into a 10 knot headwind. Marcin Rymarz and Will Inder-Gray have both chalked off their field landing and Navex exercises on their way to completing their SPL's, and we had a visit from a lovely Bücker Jungmann biplane (pictured). We also had a couple of pretty close encounters with power traffic who were clearly unaware of our presence and we remind any visitors to the Corby area that we are cleared to winch launch gliders to 2000 ft AGL and we are marked on your charts accordingly.

August has been all about competition flying for Welland's doughty band. Andy Burton was running fifth overall in Comp Enterprise at Rufforth until a Whitby landout combined with a trailer problem took him out of the running. More recently, Matthew Brown registered 25th in the Junior Nationals at Lasham, apparently less than impressive until one realises he did it in a K8 ! And this week we had two teams at the 2-seater comp at Pocklington - our Acro and a private DG500. Carl Ward flew our record 2SC distance of 240 km on Day 1 in the Acro and then did his first aerotow retrieve on Day 2 from a field near Boroughbridge thanks to the wonderful tuggy, Steve Wilkinson, who rescued him and Roy Chase (pictured). Two days later Mark Rushton and Tim Inder-Gray were part of a mass landout at Rufforth when six gliders fell victim to decaying conditions. Once again, we thank our hosts at Pocklington for a great comp, even if the weather wrecked the last few days.

The hangar doors remain closed this morning after ten straight days of flying, and what a flying week it was. We will recap on all the personal achievements in our next post, but for now we celebrate Baz Wood's amazing 300 km Gold Distance flight on Friday in his Open Cirrus. Baz was knocking on the door of his 70th birthday when he started to learn to fly and, at 79, flew for 6 hours to claim this fantastic achievement, so proving that you're never to old to learn glide. Mr Wood, we salute you !

A fantastic Friday at Lyveden today. We enjoyed the company of a local Over-50s Adventure group who were great fun, but before they arrived we had just enough time to send young Tor West-Ley solo after about 40 training flights - an astonishing achievement and testimony to his dedication and natural aptitude. We are convinced that Tor will go far indeed. Photos show Tor with our K13 and the mandatory handshake with Tim, who sent him off solo.

A very busy few days at Lyveden. On Friday evening we were delighted to welcome nearly 20 Higham Ferrers Scouts who all enjoyed their flights in the evening sunshine. Saturday was a productive training day with the added bonus of much improved soaring conditions as the afternoon wore on. Sunday was better still with super thermals to over 5000 ft. Andy Burton and Baz Wood had a cracking return trip to Abergavenny in their DG500 whilst CFI Mark notched up a couple of hundred kilometres with a less ambitious trip to Bedford and Newark. As we move into the peak summer soaring season we are finding an increasing number of our members are going missing. Young Lewis Lunden dropped in at Sutton Bank last weekend at the start of a grand tour of the BGA's northern outposts and duly converted to the Astir and did his first single-seat aerotow, so huge thanks go to all at Yorkshire GC for making Lewis so welcome. Corey White spent a few days at Hus Bos on work experience and found himself flying a K21 with our very old friend Andy Parish, and Andy Burton has just returned from the Shenington Regionals where he enjoyed 6 flying days including a mad Friday when he flew over 300km in a 3-hour task in a Libelle, topping out at over 8000 ft at times ! We now look forward to our imminent flying week. Photos show Lewis flying the WGC flag at Sutton Bank.

It's been a couple of weeks since our last update, perhaps understandable given last week's intense heat which saw us cancel an evening flying group. The last tropical day on Friday didn't deter a hardcore team from turning out to help get two of our club gliders through their annual inspections, with one or two unnecessarily bare torsos on display for which councilling has been offered for the most traumatised. But Monday and Tuesday this week brough out the best in us. On Monday a fantastic team turned out just to get two instructors launched in return for a club flying day on Tuesday. Day 1 saw Mark Rushton get to Blakeney Point and back (pictured). Day 2 saw Paul Burnet enjoy his first solo soaring flight, topping out at 4000 ft whilst Mark flew a 200 km triangular task around Husbands Bosworth, Gransden Lodge and Crowland, all former clubs of our recently departed friend, Strzeb, in his honour. We reckon it all illustrates the Club ethos in its very best sense !

Friday saw our fourth youth group visit of the year as Rushden Scouts finally paid us a visit after a previous weather cancellation and had a cracking evening, with thermal conditions hanging on until well after 6pm in a fresh breeze. Our initial connection with the Scout movement was with Sywell Air Scouts but word has spread and this year will, weather permitting, see visits from Sywell, Rushden, Thrapston and Woodford, with another group from Stamford handed over to our friends at Upwood as our diary is full - a nice problem to have !
