5 Essential Fascia Facts

If you’ve never heard of fascia, this article quickly explains why it’s important and why you need to connect with yours!

1.Fascia forms a seamless, three-dimensional web that surrounds and supports all your muscles, bones, organs, and cells and is what holds your body together.

2.Fascia is made of a stringy, white substance comprised mostly of collagen.

3.Inactivity causes fascia to stiffen and can lead to chronic pain and dysfunction. Adhesions or scar tissue within the fascial network limit movement and can affect nerve pathways, causing referred pain.

4.Exercise like Pilates and Yoga can help to improve the health of your fascia making it more soft, lubricated and flexible.

5.Fascia serves as a bridge between the physical and energetic aspects of our being. It contains sensory receptors and can be influenced by emotional and psychological factors. Once again, practices like Pilates, Yoga and meditation positively impact fascial health, enhancing the mind-body connection.

This odd looking piece of Pilates apparatus might not seem particularly exciting but it’s an amazing bit of kit for getting deep into the abdominal muscles and developing a more flexible spine. The back bend over the barrel is the perfect antidote to the hunched forward posture desk work puts us in. And the shape of the spine corrector helps us work into the sides of the body in a way you just can’t do on a mat.

If you’re new to Pilates and you feel like trying out some of the larger Pilates apparatus I’m offering a free one to one taster session at the Portland Therapy Centre. Just message me on Facebook and we’ll get it set up!

Discover the top 5 reasons for learning Pilates 👇

1️⃣ Improved Core Strength:
Pilates core strengthening focuses on developing a strong and stable core, including your abdominal muscles, back, hips, and pelvis. Strengthening these muscles enhances your overall physical strength, stability, and performance.

2️⃣ Enhanced Flexibility:
Pilates incorporates stretching and lengthening movements that promote flexibility. Regular practice helps increase your range of motion, allowing you to move with more ease and grace.

3️⃣ Increased Stability:
By engaging your deep core muscles, Pilates helps improve your balance and stability. This is particularly beneficial in daily activities, sports, and preventing falls or injuries.

4️⃣ Better Posture:
A strong core is essential for maintaining good posture. Pilates exercises target the muscles responsible for proper alignment, helping you develop a tall and upright posture both during workouts and in everyday life.

5️⃣ Reduced Risk of Injuries:
When your core is strong, it acts as a solid foundation for movement, reducing the strain on other parts of your body. This decreased strain and improved body mechanics can lower the risk of injuries, especially in the lower back and joints.
