Down Through the Ages
Rococo
We've reached what is perhaps the most gloriously excessive chapter in our Down Through the Ages series.
The Rococo era, roughly 1720 to 1780, was the age of Versailles at its most theatrical. Louis XV held court in palaces dripping with gilded furniture, painted ceilings and mirrored halls. Women's skirts reached extraordinary widths, held out by panniers at the hips. Hairstyles grew so tall they sometimes required structural support. The colour palette softened into powder blues, blush pinks, sage greens and gold.
The gentlemen kept pace. Embroidered coats, lace cuffs, silk breeches and powdered wigs were simply the baseline.
However, while the aristocracy danced, the world was changing fast.
Across the Atlantic, the American Revolution was brewing - the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, right at Rococo's peak. Trade with Qing Dynasty China was booming, which is why Rococo interiors are full of pagodas, willow pattern and lacquered furniture. In the salons of Paris, Voltaire and Rousseau were publishing radical ideas about liberty and reason that would fuel the French Revolution just a decade later.
Meanwhile, science was advancing at extraordinary speed. Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity in 1752. James Watt was perfecting the steam engine. The foundations of the modern world were being laid while Versailles looked the other way.
These portraits reimagine Rococo fashion with one small twist: the fabrics are down.
Next up: Regency. Watch this space.

Down Through the Ages
Baroque
We've reached chapter four of our Down Through the Ages series and we've arrived in one of the most dramatic periods in art and fashion history.
The Baroque era, roughly 1600 to 1750, transformed European culture. It was the age of Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Dyck; painters who mastered the art of chiaroscuro, using light and shadow to create portraits of extraordinary psychological depth. It was also the era of Rubens, whose sumptuous canvases celebrated the human form with unashamed opulence.
In fashion, the Baroque period was equally theatrical. Vast quantities of silk, velvet and lace. Enormous lace collars giving way to cascading cravats. Pearls worn in ropes and clusters. And for the gentlemen, wide-brimmed hats with extravagant feathers; because subtlety was simply not on the agenda.
It was an age of excess. And we think it deserved down.
These portraits reimagine Baroque fashion with one small twist: the fabrics are down. The result feels surprisingly at home among all that drama and shadow.
Next up in the series: 18th century Rococo. Watch this space.

Down Through the Ages
Renaissance
We've reached chapter three of our Down Through the Ages series — and we've arrived in Renaissance Italy.
From the draughty castles of the Middle Ages, through the extravagant courts of Tudor England, and now to the sun-drenched palazzos of Florence and Venice.
The painters of the Renaissance knew how to capture luxury. Velvet, silk, pearls, jewels. Every portrait a statement of wealth and refinement.
So what if they'd had down?
We think Leonardo would have approved.
These portraits reimagine Renaissance fashion with one small twist: the fabrics are down. The result is something rather beautiful ... and surprisingly wearable.
Next up in the series: 17th century Baroque. Watch this space.

Down Through the Ages
Tudor
We've reached the second chapter of our Down Through the Ages series ; and things are getting rather grand.
What if the Tudor court had discovered down?
From Henry VIII's padded doublets to Elizabeth I's extraordinary ruffs, the Tudors loved excess. The bigger the silhouette, the better. So imagine what they'd have done with a fabric that was light, warm and gloriously puffed.
We think they'd have been obsessed.
These portraits reimagine Tudor fashion with one small twist: the fabrics are down. The result is something rather magnificent.

Down Through the Ages
Medieval
We've been asking ourselves a question lately...
What if the women of the Middle Ages had access to down jacket technology?
We think they'd have embraced it wholeheartedly. Warmth was everything in a draughty castle and goose down has been keeping people warm for centuries, long before the modern puffer jacket came along.
These images reimagine medieval fashion with one small twist: the fabrics are down. The result is something rather beautiful.
We're running this as a series — Down Through the Ages — working forward through the centuries of fashion history. Next up: Tudor and Elizabethan. Watch this space.

From the mountain to your jacket.
We are never happier than when we're in the mountains; winter or summer. It's where we work best as a family.
Inspired by this, we took to the design board and came up with this prototype: two patches layered together to depict a mountain range — and we're pretty happy with the results.
What do you think? What inspires you? Send us your idea and we'll see what we can do.

This is the blackbird who visits our garden every day, perched in the Actinidia (kiwi) plant outside our window. We've been watching him for weeks, and one day it struck us: his silhouette is just beautiful. Simple, bold, unmistakable.
So we turned him into a patch.
