“There are no imposters, only moments where we could have been better prepared.” – Viv Groskop on the How To Own the Room podcast.

Ever felt like an imposter? It might be less about your abilities and more about feeling unprepared. Confidence isn’t a personality trait; it’s something we build with preparation and practice.

What’s one way you prepare for success? Share in the comments!

Ever felt a bit uncomfortable with the pre-meeting small talk? You’re not alone. For many, especially introverts, jumping into conversations with a crowd can be daunting. We often want to have a strong presence but with a group conversation already in full sway, it can feel difficult to break in.

This may not be a problem for some, especially if you are a type Yellow person (see my previous post on Surrounded by Idiots). But others what if there was a way to navigate this in a more authentic way?

Here’s a simple tip: Join the meeting early.

By being one of the first to arrive, you get the chance to connect with the initial one or two people who join. For many this is an easier setting, and actually plays their strengths in one-to-one relationship building. It allows the space for a more meaningful conversation, rather than struggling to break into an ongoing group discussion.

This may albeit be brief, but you’ve successfully established yourself in the conversation, and you potentially have made a new connection or strengthen a relationship - possibly even with a key stakeholder - result!

What could this look like?

Sample script:
[Danny joins the call, that Jin is already on]

Jin: Oh high, Danny how are you?

Danny: Great thanks, and you?

Jin: Yeah good thank you. Danny, how’s your day going, all going according to plan?

Danny: Haha, yeah not quite!

Jin: Oh really, tell me more…

There’s probably a whole other article to write about meaningful conversation starters! Would you find that article useful? Comment “meaningful” if so. Or better still, how would you help Jin open the conversation better? Drop your own conversation starters below.

So give it a try and see how it transforms your meetings. And why not come back and let me know how you get on!

Ever feel like you’re “Surrounded By Idiots”? You might just need a fresh perspective!

In “Surrounded By Idiots,” Thomas Erikson delves into the complexities of human behavior using a simple, yet brilliant, color-coded system. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their communication skills and understand the diverse personalities around them.

Erikson categorizes personalities into four distinct colors: Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue. Each color represents a different type of behavior and communication style.

🔴 Reds are dominant and driven.
Are you a go-getter, always ready to take charge and make quick decisions? Reds tend to be natural leaders who thrive in high-pressure situations.

🟡 Yellows are the social butterflies.
They’re enthusiastic, persuasive, and always full of ideas. Do you light up the room with your charisma? Are you fantastic at networking? Chances are you’re a Yellow.

🟢 Greens are the harmonious and dependable team players.
They’re calm, supportive, and great listeners. Greens excel in environments where cooperation and stability are key. Does this resonate with you?

🔵 Blues are the analytical and detail-oriented thinkers.
If you predominantly value accuracy, order, and thoroughness, you’re likely to be a Blue. Blues are your go-to for meticulous planning and problem-solving.

Have you ever jumped into a project only to realise halfway through that you're just not clicking with your team? Coaching can be the same! That’s why I always kick off with a Chemistry Meeting.

What's a chemistry meeting?

It's a relaxed, no-pressure conversation where we get to know each other. It’s a time to figure out if our personal styles resonate, which will ultimately dictate whether or not the coaching engagement will be successful.

Here’s why it’s crucial:

1. Connection: The coach-client relationship is built on trust and understanding. We need to vibe!

2. Clarity: We outline goals, expectations, and how we can best work together.

3. Comfort: It ensures both sides feel confident and comfortable moving forward.

A strong foundation makes for a successful coaching journey.
