Most beginners go to the gym without a plan or understanding the real reason they are there. What they want to work on, what they like (or what they don’t like).

When everything feels unfamiliar and confusing, ‘just going more’ doesn’t always work, because going more with the same sporadic plan isn’t going to create confidence but probably more confusion.

What worked for Imogen was simplifying what she was already trying to do, helping her understand what was working and what wasn’t. And more importantly, getting her to enjoy what she was doing rather than dreading every session.

Within weeks...
She wasn’t overthinking every set
She was just...training as if it was nothing.

Now she walks into the weights area without second guessing whether she should be there or not.

If the gym still feels intimidating or confusing, even though you’ve been going for ages. DM me ‘GYM’ and we can break it down together ✨

When you walk into the gym planning on FINALLY using the free weights but you “just warm up on the treadmill” instead 👀

You’re not struggling because you’re not doing enough, you’re struggling because you’re probably doing too much inconsistently.

Learning requires repetition and if you’re not repeating the same thing, your brain and body will never understand what it’s doing.

Giving yourself too much choice is leading to decision fatigue which can lead to avoidance and inconsistency.

Doing exercises you’re familiar with builds competence which then builds confidence.

Doing the same 2 or 3 sessions per week will let you feel more comfortable with what you’re already doing which removes pressure and creates a clear win!

If you can’t feel the exercise working, it’s probably not the exercise.

It’s the speed you’re doing it at.

A lot of people rush reps, which means your brain doesn’t get enough time or feedback to actually recognise which muscle should be working.

So instead of building a mind-muscle connection… your body just gets through the movement as quick as possible (which we are all probably guilty of when it’s hard 😅)

Try this instead during your next workout:

Slow your reps down to ~3-second lowering
Pause for 1 second at the hardest point
Then continue your reps as normal

Rather than increasing the weight or going faster if you can’t feel it, focus on feeling the muscle working. Imagine the muscle lighting up in your mind.

This is a really good way to start building awareness and confidence in the gym, especially understanding which muscles are working.

It’s also exactly how I coach anyone that I train, rather than just giving workouts, I help you understand what you’re doing and why it works.

If you’ve ever struggled to “feel” exercises, save this and try it next time you’re doing a workout.

Most women delay starting the gym because they feel like the need to be more confident, more fit or just know more before they start.

But that’s probably why they stay stuck in the same place.

My job as a personal trainer isn’t just to give you exercises… it’s to help you understand what you’re doing and why, help you build confidence and to help you actually feel comfortable in the gym.

If you feel like that’s what you’ve been missing, message me ‘START’ and we can chat about what might suit you 😊.

If you feel like you’re not progressing in the gym, this is probably why.

Most beginners think progress means lifting heavier weights every week

So when they can’t lift more, they assume:
→ they’re weak
→ they’re doing something wrong
→ or the gym “just isn’t for them”

But that’s not actually the problem.

The problem is how you’re measuring progress.

Because real progression isn’t just about adding more weight...

It looks like:
→ more reps with the same weight
→ Moving with more control (instead of rushing everything)
→ Improving your range of motion
→ feeling more stable and confident in what you’re doing

That’s what builds strength, not just chasing numbers for the sake of it.

This is where a lot of people get stuck.

They skip the foundations, try to jump ahead, and then feel like nothing’s working.

If your workouts feel inconsistent, confusing, or like you’re always second-guessing yourself…

It’s usually because you don’t have a clear structure to follow.

And once you fix that, everything starts to make sense.

DM me “PROGRESS” and I’ll send you a simple way to structure your workouts so you actually know how to improve each week.

One of the biggest reasons people struggle to feel confident in the gym isn’t motivation.

It’s lack of structure.

When you don’t have a clear plan, everything feels uncertain:

- You second guess your exercise choices
- You don’t know if you’re progressing
- You feel like you’re just “doing stuff”

And that’s exhausting.

But structure doesn’t need to be complicated.

In fact, the more beginner you are, the simpler it should be.

Good structure gives you:
- clarity on what to do
- confidence in what you’re doing
- a way to actually see progress

And most importantly…

It removes that constant mental noise of:
“Am I doing this right?”

If your current workouts feel random or inconsistent, don’t try to do more.

Simplify it, repeat it, and understand what you’re trying to do.

That’s where confidence starts.

Save this for your next gym session
