Some very exciting things are happening here at Autism Bristol. Plans for holiday therapy groups are well underway. These will take place in Bristol and will be aimed at both younger and older children with autism; as well as support for their families.
We are planning to run fun, intensive, interactive play sessions. Working on developing communication and play skills, interacting with other children and how to play games! All of which are very important skills that link together with making friends and being successful in the playground at school.

New year and new patterns of behaviour

Let’s face it, it’s dark outside and it feels a bit blah. The good news is that you all made it through Christmas and into the new year. Did you make any new year resolutions? Are they able to be achieved? One of the most important things that always comes up is self-care. We all run out of time for self care. What do these words mean to you? Does it mean getting more sleep, drinking more water, eating healthier? Does it mean taking more time to appreciate the small things, like when you see your child with autism do something that is completely new or completely unique to them? Whatever you are going to do, you have to make sure that you are OK, in order to help others.
For that reason, our New Year’s resolution is to make this page an interactive platform for ourselves and everyone to share ideas and advice on everyday challenges and triumphs that autism can bring. And to remind you to take some time out of your day, to take care yourself!
So, to start, feel free to share how you are going to increase your self-care this year, so that you have strength, positivity and patience for 2019.

Watch this video as a family and have fun guessing each emotion. Try to think about what triggers these feelings in you and what you do to deal with them.

Inside Out: Guessing the feelings.

Its that time of year where we are back at school and you hope that everything is settled. It's not always that smooth with children with autism. Right about now you may be feeling worried or stressed about how the school year is going. Don't be afraid to talk to your teachers and school SENCo's / inclusion officers and find out how things are progressing. Here are some questions for you to help you get the discussion going:
- What is my child doing well at?
- What are the areas they need extra help in?
- Do they need more support in the class?
- If so is more support available?
- What can we be doing at home to help?
- Do they show any signs of sensory difficulties?
- How are they socialising?
- What are they doing at lunchtime / playtime?

Having this healthy discussion with the school will help you keep on top of things.

So after a fantastic couple of months, we are drawing our summer groups to a close. We have had so much fun facilitating these groups, there have been mountains of bubbles, lots of Peppa Pig and lots and lots of singing. The shark song was definitely a favourite, for those who haven’t seen it, look it up and try not to sing along!
We also used a “Hello song” and a “Goodbye song” to help with transitions to and from sessions.
It has been a pleasure to work with everyone involved. Thanks to all the fabulous parents who attended and took part. Thanks to all the children who played beautifully and even made some new friends!

Autism Bristol have been busy setting up and running weekend group sessions in different locations across Bristol, this summer. So far it has been great to watch little ones have fun, interact and learn together! Thanks to Alma Vale Centre and Barton Hill Settlement for helping us make these groups come to life! We are excited to see what the upcoming weeks bring.
