It’s a big correction I’m deep in the midst of currently, helping my students to maintain their frame during pirouettes. But why do the arms & elbows drop?? There are so many reasons but I honestly feel that dancers find it safer to tuck their arms into their body and try to spin fast. When actually a slower and more beautiful pirouette is balanced out by the arms creating a frame to connect the upper & lower body. This is a great little drill to practice and get visual feedback from a partner or parent as to wether the arms and upper body are supported, or have they collapsed. Your plié (knees) when you are turned out must follow the same line as your feet. This is called tracking and is and always should be the primary focus of whenever a dancer bends their legs. Unfortunately in the world of ballet we have become obsessed with aesthetics over function, asking dancers to over turn out their feet regardless of their ability to track correctly. I don’t and will never ask a dancer to create a more stereotypical image that then therefore contradicts their ability to bend their knees in a different line than their feet. It’s dangerous and unnecessary and then therefore not only slows down their progress and development, but also may lead to complications and injuries in the near future. I love ballet and massively appreciate the use and aesthetic of turnout but only if benefits the individual over the art form itself.
