SWYD 4-2 FC United of Yate

Yesterday SWYD faced the leaders of the top division in the GFA Cup Quarter-Final at our home ground, Scott Park, Patchway.

On paper it looked as if SWYD stood little chance of coming away with a result. But we rose to the challenge and two very early goals from Ben Sayers and Matt Webley gave us a surprise 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. Both goals were assisted by our full backs Jack Sayers and Tom Hemmings with low driven crosses which found our attackers who both tapped the ball into the net.

About 25 minutes in, Ben Sayers then decided he would turn into a prime Paul Scholes and hit an absolute rocket from 30 yards out which struck the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line. 3-0.

Jack Chatfield also got in on the act with a minute of the first half to go. Chatfield was slipped in by Ben Sayers and made no mistake with the finish, placing it past the Yate keeper to make it 4-0.

The game changed in the second half, SWYD sat back and invited pressure from Yate who scored two early goals. However SWYD stayed defensively resilient and were able to hold off waves of pressure from Yate, coming away 4-2 winners.

MOTM - Josh Palmer, who played a vital role in limiting the amount of chances Yate had.
Donkey - Jack Sayers, for a terrible foul throw.

Onto the semi-finals. SWYD are massive. 💚🖤

We would also like the thank SENTIENT ELECTRICAL SERVICES for sponsoring us with our new kit.

SWYD 5-1 Kingswood
President's Cup Semi Final

With SWYD coming into the game as the highest ranked team left in the competition it was always going to be a potential banana skin for us against a very good Kingswood side, who had only recently knocked out Premier Division high flyers, Redbridge, in the previous round.

Luckily Joe Hedger's pre match pep talk of taking the game early to Kingswood and not letting them have any time on the ball worked superbly. SWYD dominated the early stages of the game with wave after wave of attack. Eventually a perfect ball from midfielder Pete Wright found Chris Dawson in acres of space over the top as he slotted home early to give SWYD a 1-0 lead. It was soon 2-0 as MoTM Aaron came up from CB to rise and head a Jake Bevan corner into the top right. With minutes to play SWYD were awarded a penalty after Robbie was brought down by the keeper in the area. Up stepped the captain to take the penalty, who hasn't missed since 2011 from the spot. Unfortunately history would repeat itself as Matt Long's well struck penalty was parried by the keeper and the rebound had too much on it for him to finish. Tom Bradley luckily was on hand to save SWYD a fight back from the opposition with a terrific save before HT. SWYD went in 2-0 up.

In the 2nd half SWYD were dealt a blow with the departure of Jack Newman who'd looked very assured up until that point in CDM but the arrival of Si West would give SWYD more attacking threat. It wasn't long until Si emphatically finished a one on one into the top right corner to make it 3-0. Kingswood began to rally back creating a few openings and were soon rewarded with a speculative long range effort deflecting off the leg of Matt Long to finally beat Bradderz in goal. 3-1. SWYD fought back though and got another decisive goal through Tom Allen who found time on the edge to tuck a deflected shot past the helpless Kingswood keeper. 4-1. With SWYD now as good as through to the final it was left to super sub Si West to convert some good work down the right by Robbie. As the ball came into the area Si feinted left with his back to goal before smashing the ball into the top corner. 👏🏻 5-1 SWYD and the lads were booking their place in the final for the 2nd time in 3 years.

We now play Longreach in the Final at Manor Farm on Sunday 28th April 11am KO.

Bristol Argyle 2-3 SWYD : President's Cup Qtr Final

SWYD were looking to make a 3rd semi final in 3 seasons against a side where we always get a tough, physical game. Argyle didn't disappoint in proving what would be another tough game going 2-0 up before the break. SWYD came in at HT knowing they had to keep the faith as the chances were coming. Having subbed himself off for the impressive Jake Bevan, Jaffa (Joe Hedger) had to bring himself back on for an enforced 2 minute cameo up front. After 30 secs he somehow got his head on the end of a cross and made it 2-1 with 35 to play. Game on, the Gaffer showing how its done 👏🏻

SWYD levelled thanks to an excellent through ball from Man of the match Matthew Barnes, who put Dawson through one on one with the keeper. Dawson calmly making it 2-2 with penalties edging ever closer. Argyle continued to push forward looking for the winner themselves in the last 10 and some last ditch defending from Aaron Clark and Matt Long combined to keep it all square.

In a repeat of scenes last year when SWYD snatched a late cup win over Argyle having gone 3-1 down to win 5-3 AET, Jake Bevan drove a perfect corner onto the head of Tom Allen who smashed the ball in for the winner 🚀 🎯 It wasn't done there though, as Argyle found one more opportunity to take it to penalties but Captain © Matt Long was on hand to block the goal bound effort from 6 yards.

SWYD go into the SEMI FINAL vs Kingswood on Sunday 31st March after they impressively knocked out favourites and last year's winners Redbridge. The other side of the draw sees 2nd Division Filton Utd take on Shadwell from Division 4.

Kingswood 0-2 SWYD

SWYD welcomed back Robbie Herring from his loan spell in Newcastle this week, and he didn't disappoint notching his 60th and 61st SWYD goals in just 65 appearances. Some record which matches the all time goals scored by Matt Long (who's played a few more over the years... (199) 👀 but who's counting) SWYD United FC started well going up 1-0 after Tom Allen headed a cleared corner back into the area. Robbie was on hand in the box as always to guide the ball into the net. SWYD could have gone 2-0 up at the break if it wasn't for the post which denied Man of the Match Josh Panting another of his ™ 30 yard screamers. HT 1-0. In the second half Kingswood came out looking for an equaliser but the SWYD defence stood strong. Substitute Chris Dawson came on to tee up Robbie for his and SWYD's 2nd of the game after a good break down the right flank.

SWYD go 2nd in the league after Galenicals slipped up against next weekend's opponents Lockstock. A win for SWYD in this one week see us go 6 unbeaten.

Motm : Josh 🥇
