Mendip Broadwalk v Long Ashton

Match report

Today we welcomed our friends from Long Ashton.

At the beginning of the season they battered us in a pre-season friendly, so this was always going to be a good test of how far we’ve progressed as a team.

First Half

From the first whistle, we were right in their faces, winning tackles, playing some good football, and creating chances. Long Ashton were a constant threat, with some very tidy players who looked dangerous whenever they had possession. However, we defended superbly as a team and looked dangerous ourselves going forward.

It was us who struck first.

After a spell of good attacking pressure, the ball dropped to our midfielder. She beat a couple of players before unleashing a powerful strike. The goalkeeper could only push it onto the post, and our striker was quickest to react, slotting home the rebound.

We continued where we left off and, within minutes, struck again. This time our striker charged down the line, turned her opponent inside out, and delivered a lovely cross. Our midfielder timed her run perfectly and smashed the ball in at the near post to double our lead.

Second Half

The second half followed a similar pattern. Long Ashton continued to look dangerous, but we defended well and remained a threat whenever we attacked their back line.

For our third goal, the roles were reversed. Our midfielder worked hard to win possession before driving forward and playing a superb through ball. Our striker ran onto it, dribbled confidently into the box, and finished calmly into the far corner.

Every player was working hard for each other, pressing together and defending in pairs to stop Long Ashton from creating clear opportunities. On the rare occasion they did break through, our goalkeeper was equal to it, pulling off a fantastic diving save.

Late in the game, with a few of our players committed forward, Long Ashton won the ball back and moved it quickly down the pitch. After a couple of sharp passes and some excellent individual skill, their player produced a superb finish into the far corner to complete the scoring.

Mendip Broadwalk v Bristol Ladies Union

Match report

Today we welcomed Bristol Ladies Union on a lovely sunny morning for what turned out to be an entertaining game.

First half

Both sides started brightly from the first whistle, although it was clear early on that the warm weather would play a part.

We struck first after a long clearance from the Bristol Ladies Union goalkeeper. Our midfielder showed great control before threading a superb pass through to our striker, who turned brilliantly, drove forward and finished superbly.

Five minutes later, Bristol Ladies Union found an equaliser. They won a kick-in in our half and, after we failed to close down quickly enough, their player turned well and fired home.

Only minutes later, we restored our lead with a fantastic solo effort. Our striker tracked back to win possession before embarking on a Messi-like run, weaving through defenders and finishing confidently at the near post.

Second half

We didn’t take long to extend our advantage after the break. A well-delivered corner was initially cleared by Bristol Ladies Union, but our midfielder reacted quickest to regain possession and deliver another dangerous ball into the box. Our second midfielder controlled it brilliantly before calmly slotting home.

Just as we thought we might be able to relax and enjoy the sunshine, Bristol Ladies Union pulled one back. A long-range effort took an awkward bounce and unfortunately skipped past our goalkeeper.

Soon after, we restored our two-goal cushion. Excellent defending at the back launched a quick attack, with our midfielder helping the ball into the path of our striker, who burst through on goal and finished clinically.

Near the end of the game, we added the perfect finishing touch with a spectacular long-range effort. We won a kick-in just inside their half, and with space opening up ahead of her, our defender took it quickly before sending a superb high ball towards goal. Whether it was a shot or a cross, nobody cared as it sailed over the keeper and nestled into the top corner.

MENDIP BROADWALK DRAW IN THE (DOWN)END

Venue: Home

Mendip Broadwalk v Downend Ravens

Match report

Today we played Downend Ravens in what was always going to be a tough game as they sit 2 leagues above us.

First Half

We started brightly and created several good half chances early on. It felt like only a matter of time before we found the breakthrough, but despite some positive attacking play, we just couldn’t apply the finishing touch.

Then came the sucker punch. Downend won a kick-in, moved the ball well, and delivered a dangerous cross into the box. Although we looked tight to our player, their attacker managed to flick it into the net and suddenly all of our hard work was undone in an instant.

To our credit, the response was excellent. Just minutes later we were level again after some strong attacking play earned us a kick-in inside their half. A brilliant delivery was met first time by our midfielder, who looped the ball beautifully over the keeper and into the net.

Second Half

The second half was end-to-end, with both teams battling hard to take control of the game. It was us who struck next though. Our midfielder picked the ball up, drove down the line, and whipped in a fantastic cross. Our striker connected brilliantly, smashing the ball into the net like a rocket. There were even shouts from the management of “wow, great strike… next time take a touch!” 😂

Downend responded well and, fair play to them, they came straight back at us. They managed to equalise before then edging themselves in front, putting us under real pressure. Throughout the game, our keeper pulled off some superb saves to keep us in it and gave the team a real platform to keep fighting.

We weren’t done yet though. Our striker continued causing all sorts of problems for their defence and after battling hard for the ball, it broke kindly into the path of our midfielder, who arrived perfectly and calmly slotted home her second goal of the game.

There were no more goals before the final whistle, and in the end both teams could be pleased with a hard-fought draw.

Squad: Boe, Charlotte, Ellie, Gracie-May, Isla, Jojo, Ophelia, Pixie, Rae

Mendip Broadwalk v Ashton

Match report

Tonight we welcomed our friends from Ashton, who currently play in Division A. Having faced them in a few friendlies before, we knew we were in for another tough and competitive match.

First Half

We started the game well and created a number of half chances early on.

Midway through the half, we finally got the breakthrough. After some good attacking play, Ashton looked to have dealt with the danger, but the ball broke loose in a scramble and our striker reacted quickest to poke the ball home.

Only minutes later, we doubled our lead. A strong clearance from our defender found our midfielder, who lifted her head and played a superb pass through to our striker. She raced in on goal and calmly slotted the ball into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Both teams were playing some really good football, but at times the final ball or finish let each side down.

Ashton managed to pull one back after catching us switched off for a moment.

We responded brilliantly to restore our two-goal cushion with an excellent team goal. Our midfielder found our striker, who then slipped the ball through to our winger. She took a couple of touches out wide before approaching goal, giving the keeper the eyes and finishing confidently at the near post.

Second Half

Both teams came out looking for more goals, but Ashton never really threatened us. Defensively we were solid, and every time we attacked we looked capable of scoring again.

The next goal took a little while to arrive, but it was definitely worth the wait. Our midfielder picked the ball up deep inside our own half, drove through the middle of the pitch and, after reaching the edge of the box, unleashed a brilliant strike past the keeper.

In the closing minutes the heavens opened and the temperature suddenly dropped, but the girls continued to push for more goals right until the final whistle. A fantastic attitude and effort from every single one of them tonight.

Squad: Amelia, Boe, Charlotte, Ellie, Evie, Georgie, Gracie-May, Isla, Jojo, Lily, Rae

Goals: Ellie(2), Amelia, Rae
