MENDIP LEAVE BRIS FEELING BLUE
Date: 26th July
Venue: Home
Weather: Perfect
Mendip Broadwalk Blue Sox v Brislington
Match report
Today we welcomed local rivals Brislington to the Theatre of Filwood.
We faced Bris twice during our first season, losing both encounters, but we haven’t met since. We knew this would be another tough test.
First Half
From the first whistle, we started brightly, applying plenty of pressure and setting the tempo. We closed down well, won our tackles and looked to move the ball forward quickly. Although our early efforts lacked conviction and were comfortably dealt with by their goalkeeper, it felt like only a matter of time before we made the breakthrough.
The opening goal came after some lovely football through midfield. A well-worked move released our midfielder out wide, and from a tight angle she fired home to give us the lead.
Just minutes later, we doubled our advantage. Our striker had started the game brilliantly, chasing what looked like a lost cause. She showed great determination to win the ball, drove forward and was rewarded with a well-taken finish.
After the frantic opening, the game settled down with both sides defending well and largely cancelling each other out until the break.
Second Half
We began the second half just as we had the first, looking to turn the screw. Every player worked tirelessly, and our midfield combined superbly to send one of our players through on goal, where she finished coolly.
Moments later, we struck again in spectacular fashion. Their goalkeeper’s clearance fell straight to our player, who flicked the ball over an opponent’s head before lofting an effort towards goal. It looked destined to drift over the bar, but the bounce deceived everyone and the ball nestled into the top corner.
With nothing to lose, Brislington committed more players forward and deservedly pulled a goal back with an excellent strike.
We responded well. As Brislington pushed on, our goalkeeper launched a superb long pass that found our striker in behind. She raced through on goal and emphatically smashed the ball into the net.
Late on, we rounded off the scoring with another excellent team move. Some lovely passing created the opening, and our midfielder timed her run perfectly before finishing confidently.
Squad: Amelia, Boe, Ellie, Evie, Gracie-May, Isla, Jojo, Pixie, Rae, Willow
Goals: Willow(3), Rae(2), Ellie
Match Report
Mendip Broadwalk Red Sox v Whitchurch Kestrels
Mendip Broadwalk Red Sox continued to build as a team with another impressive performance against Whitchurch Kestrels, despite this being only their second game together.
The Red Sox started the match brightly, taking the game to their opponents from the first whistle. With the centre mid coming incredibly close to opening the scoring with a powerful strike that crashed against the crossbar and appeared to bounce over the line, but the referee judged that the ball had not crossed the line and play continued.
The second quarter saw Mendip continue to apply pressure, creating several good chances through excellent pressing and attacking football. Their hard work was rewarded towards the end of the quarter when a forward’s shot caused problems for the goalkeeper, and under pressure from the Red Sox attack, the ball ended up in the back of the net to give Mendip a deserved 1-0 lead at half-time.
The third quarter was closely contested, with both teams creating opportunities and defending well. After several near misses at both ends, Whitchurch found an equaliser to make it 1-1.
Mendip finished the match strongly in the final quarter, keeping the pressure on and creating a number of excellent chances. The winning goal looked like it was coming, but despite their determination and attacking play, it wasn’t to be.
Another excellent performance from the Red Sox. Considering this was only the team’s second game together, the players showed great teamwork, confidence and determination throughout. There are plenty of positives to take into the next fixture as the team continues to grow together.
