Mendip Broadwalk Blue Sox v Bristol Ladies Union

Match Report

Today, we welcomed Bristol Ladies Union to Filwood for an afternoon kick-off, as they had a birthday party to attend for one of their players. Both teams were in Division C last season, so it was a good test to see how we were both progressing.

First Half

From the off, it was a cracker! Union looked composed on the ball, but we were knocking on the door and putting them under pressure. We created several great chances and showed some fantastic attacking play, keeping the opposition on their toes throughout the half.

Second Half

We came out and carried on where we left off. We were creating opportunity after opportunity, putting pressure on their defence and showing some excellent teamwork. Everyone worked tirelessly, supporting each other and keeping the intensity high right until the final whistle.

A fantastic team performance from everyone, with plenty of determination, great passing and some brilliant football on display!

Mendip Broadwalk Blue Sox v Mendip Broadwalk u12s

Match Report -

Tonight we played an in-house friendly against our Under-12s. We played them back in July and came away with a win. However, they’ve improved massively since then, scoring an impressive number of goals in their first three league games, so we knew this would be a much tougher test.

To help—or possibly hamper—us, we played 9 aside tonight using offsides and throw-ins, both of which are new to us. This resulted in a very strange five-minute team talk trying to explain the offside rule!

First half

It was a really good game from the start, with both teams battling to take control. It was a real 50/50 contest.

We defended superbly against a more physical team and, when we won the ball, we always looked threatening. Midway through the first half, we started to take control.

After winning the ball in the centre circle, our midfielder charged forward. With options to her left and right, she decided there was only one thing to do—smash it into the roof of the net from 15 yards. What a finish!

Moments later, we scored again. This time, an attacking corner was only half cleared and the ball found its way to our midfielder on the edge of the box. With a crowd of players in front of her, she stayed calm and calmly slotted the ball into the goal.

Second half

The second half continued to be a brilliant battle, with neither side willing to give an inch.

However, we struck again. Another attacking corner was played into the box and the ball popped up in a crowded penalty area. Our striker did an amazing job to take a touch and then finish brilliantly amongst a sea of players.

We continued to look for more goals, but then we came unstuck.

The Under-12s won a corner and we switched off. They took it short, played a couple of passes and finished well. A couple of our girls looked shocked—but after a quick gee-up, they were straight back at it.

And then came another cracker.

The ball was kicked out near the halfway line. Our midfielder got her head to it, knocked it into her path, drove forward and unleashed an unstoppable shot. An absolute cracker!

Right near the end, the Under-12s scored again, but the night belonged to us.

Fry Club v Mendip Broadwalk Blue Sox

Match Report -

Today, we made the short trip to Keynsham to face Fry Club. The last time we played them was in the cup last season, where we narrowly missed out. Today, the girls were determined to put things right.

First half

From the very first whistle, we took the game by the scruff of the neck. The girls were on the front foot, dominating possession and territory while playing some fantastic passing football. We created several chances but just couldn't find the breakthrough. The girls kept pushing, though, and refused to give up. Frys managed one breakaway chance but offered very little else. We hit the post 4 times during this spell. Eventually, the breakthrough came. Some lovely football between our two midfielders allowed one to make a run through and smash the ball home. We continued to create opportunities, and after more excellent build-up play from the back through midfield, our midfielder raced through and calmly doubled our lead.

Second half

We picked up exactly where we left off, continuing to dominate the game and control the play. Fry Club came out more physical, with players grabbing around the neck and wrapping their arms around our girls at corners, they also started to offer a little more with the football going forward, but that opened up spaces for us to exploit. After defending well, we worked the ball into midfield. Our midfielder drove down the line before delivering a fantastic cross. Another midfielder arrived perfectly, took a touch and slotted the ball home. We continued to create several more chances but couldn't pinch another goal that we fully deserved.

Mendip Broadwalk Blue Sox v Taunton Talent

Match Report -

Today we welcomed Taunton Talent to Filwood.

First half

The game started with both teams struggling to get the ball under control. We were having the better of the play and began to create chances, but once again we were missing that finishing touch. Against the run of play, Taunton took the lead.

The girls didn’t let their heads drop, though, and continued to push for an equaliser. It came through some lovely passing from our midfield, followed by some excellent close control and a great strike into the near post. The girls’ tails were up, and we went looking for another, but couldn’t find it before half-time.

Second half

We came out for the second half with the bit between our teeth, and wave after wave of attacks followed. A lovely through pass from our midfielder sent our striker racing clear, and she made no mistake, firing home a great strike to give us the lead.

We continued to push for more, while Taunton were mainly offering a threat on the break, so we had to stay switched on at the back — and we did exactly that.

Right near the end, Tauntons striker ran through and was fouled. A penalty. Lucky for us the penalty was struck wide. Moments later we wrapped up the game. After some lovely football, our midfielder raced forward and got her shot away. The keeper made a great save, but the ball fell kindly to our winger, who calmly slotted it home.
