This Saturday we will be hosting a coffee morning in partnership with the Ted Senior Foundation!
The foundation was set up to promote good mental health and works to prevent su***de in university sports clubs.
Please come along to the Downs Cafe at 11am this Saturday for a chill coffee and chat. It’s a chance to talk with club members and committee to raise any concerns with anything (club related or not) as well as to celebrate our successes :)
We’d love to see as many of you there as possible! Please put going on lounge so we know how many people to expect.

And finally the day dawned for the mighty UBHMHC to take on the grizzled ghosts of years past. The sunshine meant a beautiful day for hockey, and it was a beautiful start for the mighty UBH who raced out to a two goal lead thanks to leaver, hero and leader of men Owen Harries. 2-0 at half time, and we were all left wondering if the oldies had still got it. We soon got our answer as they came out flying in the second half, with who else but knight of the Ubhmhc realm sir G Hurst scoring one of the best goals you’ll see anywhere for quite a long time (annoyingly). Suddenly the alumni were 3-2 up, but the game wasn’t over yet, with Athi winning and cooly dispatching a penalty stroke to make it 3-3. A close game till the last whistle but the alumni proved the old adage that class is permanent, coming out 4-3 winners in the end. Thanks to Jen and Molly for umpiring and big Dave for coming down to support and on a personal note I’d like to thank everyone who’s been involved in medics hockey this year for what’s been a fantastic season on and off the pitch. See you all this evening! ~

For our first match since Christmas we faced off against a strong Abbeywood side, bolstered by some of our own who graciously agreed to swap sides. We started the game a little slowly, possibly due to slightly damp match shirts (my fault), and Abbeywood scored an early goal from a crash ball into the D and a tidy finish. However, after an early setback our solid defence of Shek, Ottie, Ollie and Jay gave us a strong platform to grow into the game. Some good passages of play led to a short corner, which was deflected into the top corner by Mollie from Laura’s flick. At 1-1 the Medics were on top till half time, putting together some good moves, but were unable to find the final pass to give us the goal we deserved. After a short tactical talk from myself the medics’ momentum continued into the second half, with an excellent interchange between Mollie and Will leading to a shot from Lawrence being kicked off the line by a certain high ranking club member (who I will not name for my own job security). After that scare, Abbeywood started to get back into the game and their improved passing, and our lack of fitness, led to fresher goalkeeper Emily being called into action to make a string of excellent saves. After a small scare with Abbeywood having a goal correctly ruled out in the last minute, the game finished 1-1. Probably a fair result all things considered. Player of the match went to Ollie, his distribution and tackling at CB was excellent throughout, but also special mention to Emily and Ffion, who both had excellent games.

Varsity match report ✨

Our teams were up at dawn for an early bus to Cardiff for the annual Varsity tournament, spirits high and singing all the way across the bridge. We arrived to find frozen pitches, which gave us a chance for a quick trip to Maccies to fuel us for the games ahead. Bristol’s supporters arrived in time for pushback, with a guest appearance from .richmond7 beautiful pooch, a loyal and treasured UBHMHC supporter.

The men battled it out to nil-nil at half time in a competitive game, so it was down to flicks. It was nail biting stuff, with 150 Bristol supporters watching, fingers and toes crossed, cheering. Sadly Cardiff took the win in the end with a 4-2 at penalties, but it couldn’t have been closer.

Next up was the women’s game. Their keeper was a formidable player, blocking epic shots from .x.hawes and others to keep us at bay. The final score was 2-0 to Cardiff, with two solid goals that even twinkle-toes couldn’t keep out.

Sadly no trophy was brought back with us this year, but our teams and Captain dream team and did us all proud.

hockey love, izzy xx

The Cardiff Medics have made claim that they are far superior at OSCEs than the Mighty UBH and this simply cannot stand.
On the sixth day of this fateful week, we march upon Talybont - the place home to the Cardiffians.
Much unlike the chaotic magnificence of Fortress Di**le in its pure beauty, it similarly resides in a Fresh Hotbed, much to the imitation of the infamous Stokey B.

The Severnside Derby of Medics has always boasted complete pandemonium, and this year shall host more of the same - I promise you this.

UBHMHC was built on the crux of oppression against the tyrannical dictatorship of hockey in the South West. After many victories against the ironically named W***ey (surely they should now be called ‘Lockey’ since they’ve never actually claimed their ‘W’ against the UBH), it seems only fitting we take that spirit over the border to deal with our Welsh counterparts.

It’s true that ‘Taly’ is often quieter than the Cricket Green of Di**le in Winter, but consider this our bit of charity to our friends across the Severn. Consider noise and liquid hockey our little gift to them.

Bring a Hard Hat and friends, if you have any -the Sirens are already ringing.
Aerial threats are imminent.

9am PB for the Men’s followed by the Women’s at 10.30am

This is not one to be missed.

Up the UBHMHC.

Sanam (Men’s Captain)

P.S. Shoutout to the Cardiff Medics Tik Tok for the quality content

Medics vs Bath Mixed (1-1)

Our third mixed game of the year featured an exciting team of many freshers mixed in with a few senior players. Chances for both teams in the first half came slowly, but it was encouraging to see that we enjoyed the lion's share of possession despite Bath's well-coached structure and press. The talents and composure of our defenders (Jay, Shek, Ollie, Lizzie and Emily) were on display as we transferred the ball effectively, although we insisted on building most of our attacks through the left: perhaps a statement of socialist support? Control from the midfield through Zin's silky hands as a pivot (caveat: release ball quicker!) and the tenacity, drive and skills of Lexi, Emily and Joe released our forwards on a few occasions but we were just missing the final pass/finish. We eventually found a breakthrough through Abhishek finding Molly in the D with a pinpoint pass, going on to control the game even more effectively as we grew into it. We were unlucky to concede an equaliser in the very last minute after Bath pounced on a mistake in defence but the team can be proud of how we played, especially with so many playing with one another for the first time. POTM goes to Lexi Dean for being a classy and hard-working act in midfield, with an honourable mention to Ollie Pratt for an impressive debut at CB (breaking up the Desi defence!). DOTD goes to Jay for the second game in a row: one more and Ollie will take his previously nailed-on place in the starting lineup. Thanks to all who played and those who came down to support!

After Wockey’s shocking decision to forfeit the game against us, we were met with the delightful blokes of Bath University - a sound bunch with some quality names on the backs of their shirts - shoutout ‘Vindaloo’.
It was evident from the outset that this was going to be no easy game as Bath dominated possession for the first five, and eventually bagged a goal. After a great comeback from the Mighty UBHMHC, with Owen Harries neatly converting his Penalty Flick, a huge miscommunication off the back of our own Short Corner led to a 4 on 1 attack from Bath eventually leading to the easiest goal they’ll probably ever score. The next five minutes leading up to half time were some of the hardest minutes a UBHMHC player may ever have to live through as they practically walked in another 2 goals. 4-1 to Bath at Half Time.

Let me set the scene here: the rain had been harvested from the Amazon and did not stop pouring for the entirety of the game, but that did not stop SmifSports from taking some absolutely quality shots, and it for sure wasn’t to stop the Mighty UBHMHC.
After an unsheltered team talk with a masterclass from Owen Harries, we dominated the second half with goals flying in all over the gaff. In all honesty, if we had an extra 5 minutes, we would’ve probably won the game.

The final score line was 5-4 to Bath - a team deserving of the win on the day. Shoutouts must go to their players for being good sports throughout, as well as Molly and Ottie for umpiring.

Peace & Lurve, Sanam x

For our second mixed game of the year, a 4-0 domination is more than we could ever ask for, but proved to be a closer game than the scoreline showed. This was the first Thornbury fixture that the late G Hurst hadn’t played in and therefore a top right reverse wonder goal was sadly absent from the pitch - step forward Dylan Poole with a thoroughly entertaining solo goal reminiscent of a prime Santi Cazorla (with slightly less flair, and much less swaz). Other goals came from Rahul Kota (although this is up there with one of the worst goals scored in a hockey match, ever!), and Lawrence Cobbold - the man, the myth, the legend. Molly also banged one in, but who’s surprised by that? On the other end of the pitch, special mention must go to the shot-stopping extraordinaire, Bella Green who kept the Thornbarians firmly at bay after a relatively quiet first two quarters. The highlight of the match however, happened to actually take place on the sideline. I’m not talking about Dylan Poole’s handbag moment with the Umps - rumour has it he’s still threatening to card him for utterly horrendous chat, but instead came in the form of a fellow Brummie and member of the Desi Defence. I therefore congratulate Jay Mittal on his DoD award for not separating business from pleasure. I’ll leave him to decipher that one. Congrats to Emily on her MoM performance, although surely talking about dinner plans with our CB on the hockey pitch is somewhat criminal? All in all a good shift from the Mighty UBHMHC. Still undefeated and looking as good as ever. With Endless Peace & Lurve, S Dog x (Sanam Chawla - Men’s Captain)

And there it was, the fateful return to Fortress Di**le. Another game and another Will Yeatman sending off - you really couldn’t write it.
The Mighty UBHMHC took on Keynsham for our first game back, and after we came to terms with our complete lack of fitness, we had to look no further than pinging balls and playing that all too familiar liquid hockey.
One of the many debutants, Charlie Berridge, was the first to break the deadlock after a beautiful deflection off of a wayward shot from Chawla. Two more from Berridge to complete a hat-trick on debut in the first half sealed the game for us, with a further goal from another debutant Jules Manning and goal machine Molly Hawes leaving us 5 goals up.
A strong performance from our midfield and defence made sure keeper Elkington had a quiet game.
A double Player of the Match went to Jay Mittal and Lydia Gammon for their beautiful hockey that left Keynsham reeling.
Special mention must be given to Ollie Jerv for a class performance and eventual goal, even if he was playing for the wrong team…
All in all, a truly beautiful start to the season.

Sanam Chawla + Ottie Beal
Men’s and Women’s Captains

5-1 W

goals: x3 Berridge, x1 Hawes, x1 Manning

assists: x2 Chawla, x1 Binodh, x1 Mittal
