After an incredible trip over to Japan, I'm back on UK soil and looking forward to training. Come along tonight (Thursday 8pm) if you want to learn self defence, build up fitness, confidence and meet some new like-minded friends!

I was asked recently "What's the most challenging thing you know in martial arts?". I'm sure they were wondering what the hardest technique is, but I thought about this for a while.
Years of practice, multiple disciplines, being both thrown and doing the throwing. I ran through hundreds of throws in my head (and there are some truly spectacular ones!) Then there are all the locks, pins, even weapons… and some weapon defence can be seriously challenging.
But then it came to me. Something FAR more challenging than any of these techniques, and yet so much simpler too.
Just turning up.
It's the one thing no one else can do for you. Once you're in the class, we'll show you what to do, show you how to do it, correct you when it's not quite right, and praise you when it is. You'll be helped to be better, more confident, fitter, stronger and be able to face difficult situations with experience and awareness.
But none of that matters unless you decide, for yourself, to be in the class.
Martial arts is a long journey with no shortcuts but vastly rich rewards. It takes time to grow physically and mentally, to raise your confidence, your courage, your strength, your fitness, and that growth only happens one session at a time. So if you've been thinking about it… don't look for reasons you can't be there because of how you are feeling in the moment, but remind yourself of all the reasons you need to be. It's on those days we have the best sessions.

Sorry I didn't get the video done this week (I will do it!). I was spending time with new students that are beginning their journey. It's something I love doing. If you want to start your martial art journey in a relaxed, super-friendly environment, then please come and join us this Thursday! You don't have to be fit or have any previous martial arts experience, you just have to decide that you want to do it and be there.

There are many things we feel uncomfortable doing. Whether its doing the work to get fitter, more confident or allowing you the headspace to learn new skills, these things require effort in commitment, energy and an unwavering willingness to just keep at it until it starts to feel normal. It's far easier said than done, but when you achieve these things, there no better feeling of success, than discovering your own new limits.
Mine, right now, is this.. Social media.. and talking about what I do. It makes me cringe, but what's the point spending decades teaching a life skill, if no one knows its available to them. So, just like I tell my students about really pushing themselves to get better every time they train, I'm going to push myself to do something I should do, but feel uncomfortable doing.
I'm going to start doing some videos. I feel the anxious sweat just thinking about it, just like people have when its the first time they step into a dojo not knowing what to expect. If you come to our class we'll handhold you whilst you inevitably stumble and learn at the start. It works, and I'd love people here to help me in the same way. Tell me what videos you'd like to see. Whether you are a beginner, or a black belt, ask an interesting question, or ask to see a technique in the comments below and I'll give you my perspective (because that's all anyone can do).

Sometimes we just need a change in life that makes you feel better. It might be that you want to feel confident about your health and well-being, confident that you can defend yourself should a situation arise, confidence that you can fall should you simply trip over or be knocked down. Our classes look at all these things and I do it because I love seeing the positive changes it gives people every time they train and learn. Come and join us on Thursday at the Lyde Green Community Centre at 7:45pm for a 2 hour session that can help you be and feel better. Your first session is completely free too.

It's time to do something really cool for 2026. Forgot the treadmill, why not get fitter and learn a practical skill at the same time? Whether you are an experienced martial artist or an absolute beginner that is currently feeling unfit, you'll find an amazing group of friends to help you in our classes.
