Herbert was born in Bristol in 1888 and moved around somewhat in his early years.

Previous addresses have seen Herbert reside in Clifton, Avonmouth and Bishopsworth.
While living in Elmdale cottage Avonmouth, Herbert was actively involved with Avonmouth OBRFC where he held the position of honorary secretary and can be seen pictured in the 1908-09 team photo in the clubhouse. His line of work as a Corporation Clerk would have made him a perfect match for that role.

Herbert enlisted to do his bit for King and country, records show he became a corporal in the 12th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, known as ‘Bristol’s Own’. The regiment was raised not long after war had been declared in 1914 and the barracks on Whiteladies Rd & areas of the downs were used for training exercises.

Sadly, his life came to an end at the age of 27 while fighting for his country in active service. Herbert was killed in action during WW1, his name is etched in the stones of Thiepval Memorial, near Somme, France alongside over 72,000 servicemen. Herbert’s name is also remembered at Avonmouth Church & the The Bristol Port Company memorial plaques of those local men lost to war.

Lest We Forget…

We Thank former club captain Craig Britton for his time in researching Herbert J Lumbard. ⚫️🔴⚫️
