Really pleased to be featured again in Men’s Fitness.

This time I was asked to comment on AI, biomarkers and health data — and why having more information doesn’t automatically mean we understand our health better.

One of the points I made was:
“There’s an important distinction between having information and understanding what that information means in context.”

AI, wearables and online testing can all be useful, but they should support proper healthcare conversations rather than replace them.

You can read the full article here:
https://mensfitness.co.uk/features/why-your-health-data-still-needs-a-doctors-expertise/

Another good example of why evidence, context and sensible interpretation matter more than simply collecting more numbers.

🌀 Clubbell Mobility: Strength Meets Flow 💪

Looking for a way to build strength, mobility, and coordination all at once? Clubbell training might just be your secret weapon.

Unlike traditional weights, clubbells challenge your stability, grip, and joint control through dynamic, circular movements. They’re especially powerful for:

🦵 Shoulder and hip mobility 🌀 Thoracic spine rotation 💥 Grip strength and wrist health 🧠 Coordination and mind-body connection

They’re low-impact but high-reward—and ideal for improving how your body actually moves in real life and in sport.

I incorporate Clubbell mobility work into personal training sessions for clients who want to move better, feel stronger, and prevent injuries.

Let’s get you flowing with power and control.

🍺 NO ALCOHOL OCTOBER — WHO'S IN?

I'm launching a 31-Day No Alcohol Challenge for October, and you're very welcome to join us.

But we're not running it here on Facebook/Instagram.

The challenge will take place inside my FREE Fit After 50 online community, where I'll post the challenge, check-ins, information and support throughout the month.

The idea is simple:

1st–31st October. No alcohol.

This isn't about preaching that nobody should ever drink. It's about taking alcohol out for one month and seeing what YOU notice.

What happens to your sleep?

Your energy?

Your mood?

Your weight or waist?

Your training and recovery?

And perhaps most importantly, what do you learn about your own relationship with alcohol?

There are no extra workouts attached to this. If you're already exercising, carry on with what you're doing. This is about making one change and seeing whether it helps you feel and live better.

Want to join us?

Come over and join my Fit After 50 Skool Community — it's completely FREE to join:
👉
Once you're in, look for the No Alcohol October Challenge and tell me “I'M IN!”

The community isn't just for this challenge either. It's aimed particularly at those of us in the second half of life who want sensible, practical information about exercise, strength, mobility, health, nutrition and living well — without the fitness-industry nonsense.

There are free courses, educational posts, discussions and plenty more challenges coming.

You don't have to be one of my PT clients. Everyone is welcome.

Move Better. Feel Better. Live Better.

See you inside.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share something I’m putting in place for my personal training sessions and outdoor activities.

I work mainly with adults over 50, and I’ve decided to rent a portable defibrillator (AED) so that one is available during sessions and when we’re training outdoors. It’s simply an extra safety measure and something I feel is sensible to have in place.

Because I run a small independent business, I’m renting the unit rather than buying one outright. I’ve set up a small GoFundMe to help cover the first year of rental, which is around £450.

Once it’s in place I’ll also register it on the national defibrillator database used by ambulance services, so if it’s ever needed locally emergency services will know it’s available.

If anyone would like to support the idea that would be greatly appreciated, but please don’t feel any obligation at all.

I’ve been thinking hard lately…

Why am I not inundated with people wanting the success I know I can bring?
I see the results. I see the confidence grow. I see strength return. I see people move better, stand taller, feel younger.

So why aren’t more people queueing up?

I think I’ve worked it out.
I call it “Personal Training.”
And that might be the problem.

Because when many adults over 50 hear “PT” they think:

• Hardcore • Young trainers shouting • Six-pack culture • Before and after photos • Bootcamps • Intimidating environments

That’s not what I do.

What I actually provide is:
Structured, safe strength training designed to prevent decline.

That’s different.
This isn’t about beach bodies. It’s about bone density. It’s about muscle mass. It’s about metabolic health. It’s about balance. It’s about staying independent.

It’s about being able to lift your grandchildren. Climb stairs confidently. Travel without worrying about your knees. Stay out of hospital if we can help it.

It’s long-term thinking.

Maybe I need to stop calling it PT.

Because what we’re really doing here is building capacity for the next 10–20 years of life.

And that matters more than any transformation photo ever could.
If that resonates, tell me.

Because I suspect there are more people who need this — they just don’t realise it yet.

Ever feel like you’re training hard but not seeing the results you want?

Heart rate zone training might be the game-changer you’ve been missing.
By training in specific heart rate zones, you can target different fitness goals with precision—whether that’s burning fat, building endurance, or pushing performance.
Here’s a quick breakdown:

💙 Zone 2 (60–70%) – Fat-burning, aerobic base building
❤️ Zone 3 (70–80%) – Improved cardiovascular fitness
🔥 Zone 4 (80–90%) – Lactate threshold & speed work 💀 Zone 5 (90–100%) – Max effort, peak performance.

The key? Train with purpose, not guesswork.

In my coaching, I help clients:

✅ Identify their zones
✅ Use heart rate to guide their sessions
✅ Get better results with less wasted effort

Whether you're walking, running, cycling—or lifting weights—knowing your heart rate zones can transform your training efficiency.

Fitness Training & The Catwalk

One of my clients today mentioned those fitness books and headlines that promise “Get fit in 28 days” or claim that one training method is always better than another.

It sparked a great discussion about how extreme some of those messages can be, and I used a fashion show analogy to explain my perspective.

When you watch a high-end fashion show, you often see dramatic, almost unwearable designs - meter long trains or outfits no one would ever wear down the high street.

Those pieces aren’t meant for everyday life; they simply set a trend. Then the fashion houses adapt those ideas into something real people can actually wear.

The same happens in the fitness world. The “runway” is full of extreme headlines - “Never do steady-state cardio!” or “HIIT is the only way!” - but when we translate the science into real life, it becomes far more balanced and sustainable.

In my programming and personalised planning, I take those big ideas and tailor them to each individual client - combining lower-level movement (like walking, technique, or mobility work) with strength and interval training that fits their goals, recovery needs, and overall health.

So just like fashion, we take the science off the catwalk and make it fit real people in the real world. 👟💪

🦴 Supporting Bone Health with Osteoporosis – Safely

Osteoporosis makes bones weaker and more likely to break—but the right habits can help slow bone loss and support strength.

✅ Safe ways to support bone health:

🏋️‍♀️ Weight-bearing exercise – Walking, light resistance training, or dancing help stimulate bone growth.

🥦 Bone-friendly nutrition – Get enough calcium (dairy, leafy greens, fortified foods) and vitamin D (sunlight, oily fish, supplements if advised).

🚭 Avoid smoking & limit alcohol – Both can accelerate bone loss.

🛡 Fall prevention – Keep your home well-lit and clutter-free to reduce trip hazards.

💡 Even small, consistent steps can make a difference over time.

⚠️ Disclaimer: This is general information, not medical advice. If you have osteoporosis or other health conditions, always consult your doctor or a qualified health professional before starting any exercise program or supplement—they can tailor a safe plan for you.

Why It’s So Important Your Fitness Instructor is Qualified – Especially for Older Adults & Those with Health Conditions

When it comes to fitness, one-size-fits-all simply doesn’t work—especially if you’re an older adult or living with a long-term condition. The wrong type of exercise (or poor coaching) can cause more harm than good. That’s why it’s vital to work with a properly qualified fitness professional.

Here’s why:
1️⃣ Safety First
A qualified trainer knows how to assess your posture, mobility, balance, heart health and strength before you start. This means your plan will be safe for you personally, not just a generic workout. 📎 Why screening matters: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_trainer 📎 Working with long-term conditions: https://www.fitpro.com/blog/working-with-long-term-conditions/

2️⃣ Tailored to Your Needs
Our bodies change as we age—muscle mass, flexibility, and balance naturally decline. A qualified trainer creates a plan that protects your joints, improves mobility, and supports everyday movement. 📎 Training older adults: https://www.futurefit.co.uk/blog/personal-training-for-older-adults/ 📎 Benefits for seniors: https://www.mypthub.net/blog/personal-training-for-seniors-8-benefits-for-you-your-clients/

3️⃣ Adapting for Health Conditions
If you live with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, COPD—or any long-term health condition—exercise needs to be carefully adapted. A qualified trainer knows how to work alongside your healthcare team to make sure your fitness supports, not stresses, your health. 📎 UK stats on long-term conditions: https://www.fitpro.com/blog/working-with-long-term-conditions/ 📎 How certified trainers help: https://denverymca.org/certified-older-adult-fitness-trainers

4️⃣ Proven Results
It’s not just theory—programmes like Enhance®Fitness have shown: ✅ Better balance & mobility ✅ Reduced falls ✅ Improved mood ✅ Greater independence 📎 Evidence: https://www.ncoa.org/article/evidence-based-program-enhancefitness/ 📎 Reducing chronic disease risk: https://www.aafp.org/pubs/afp/issues/2017/0401/p425.html

5️⃣ Trust & Motivation
When you know your trainer is fully qualified for your needs, you feel safe, understood, and supported—making it much easier to stay motivated. 📎 Inspiring confidence: https://denverymca.org/certified-older-adult-fitness-trainers 📎 Working with a senior fitness expert: https://www.issaonline.com/blog/post/why-become-a-personal-trainer-for-seniors

💬 Bottom line: The right trainer doesn’t just make you fitter—they make sure you can move better, feel better, and live better, without risking your health.
