Why every woman over 40 should consider strength training
Ladies, hitting 40, 50 or even 60 doesn't mean it's time to slow down. In fact, it's one of the most important times to start building strength!
Here are 10 reasons why:
* 🦴 Stronger bones – Resistance training helps maintain bone density and can reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures as we age.
* 💪 Preserves muscle mass – We naturally lose muscle as we get older, particularly around menopause. Strength training helps slow and even reverse some of that loss.
* 🔥 Supports metabolism – Maintaining muscle helps support your metabolic health, blood sugar regulation and energy expenditure.
* ❤️ Improves heart health – Regular resistance training can help lower blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health.
* 🧠 Supports mental wellbeing – Can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood and give you a much-needed confidence boost.
* 🌸 Helps during menopause – Although it won't directly balance your hormones, strength training can help manage changes in body composition, muscle strength and bone health associated with declining oestrogen.
* 🦵 Supports arthritic joints – Strengthening the muscles surrounding joints can help reduce pain, stiffness and improve function for women living with osteoarthritis.
* 😴 Improves sleep quality – Regular exercise can support better sleep, something many women struggle with during perimenopause and menopause.
* ⚖️ Improves balance and mobility – Stronger muscles improve stability, coordination and independence, reducing the risk of falls as we age.
* ❤️ Builds confidence and resilience – There's something incredibly empowering about discovering what your body is capable of, especially when society keeps telling women they're getting older!
My favourite message for women over 40?
You're not training to look 25 again. You're training to feel strong, capable and independent at 50, 60, 70 and beyond.
You don't have to lift heavy straight away. You don't have to be fit to start. And you certainly don't have to look a certain way.
You just have to start somewhere.
Strong women aren't born. They're built. And there's no age limit.
