🌟We are looking for a part time groom to join the Higher Spen Team🌟

Days: Monday to Friday.
Hours: 8.30 to 12.00.
Rate of pay is relative to your age and experience.
This will be a 6 month contract with the potential to extend.

The ideal candidate will be:
🔹Confident and experienced at handling horses.
🔹 Hands on, hardworking and passionate about horses.
🔹Friendly and polite.
🔹Punctual and reliable.
🔹Work well within a team.

Duties include:
🔹All aspects of yard work carried out to a very high standard.
🔹Feeding.
🔹Mucking out.
🔹Grooming.
🔹Turning out/bringing in.
🔹Filling nets.
🔹Assisting with hydrotherapy.

Fantastic improvement in strength, condition and shape for Duke following a 4 week swimming stay!💪🏼

Many people ask whether the weight loss and fitness results we achieve can be maintained? The answer is a resounding YES if the horse is carefully managed when they go home.

We received this wonderful update about Apple who came to us in Spring 2024 for 2 weeks swimming to help lose weight and overcome EMS. He now has a perfect condition score according to the BHS!👏

Our yard manager Keyah’s horse Elvis made incredible progress during a weeks swimming to kick start his return to work. He had been out of work for a few months while recovering from a deep laceration on his right hind limb caused by a kick from another horse. Elvis is normally very fit and strong but rapidly lost his muscle following the injury. During his week of swimming, Elvis very quickly regained his pre-injury strength and fitness levels. Well done Elvis! Super⭐️

Monty has been on an incredible health and fitness journey since he joined his owner in Jan 2025. From being critically overweight, Monty has lost nearly 200kg in less than a year aided by a combination of regular exercise, life on his owner’s track system, careful dietary management and two swimming stays at Higher Spen (most recently losing 43kg during a week’s stay). He is now super fit, active, happy and healthy! Massive congratulations to Monty and his owner Fay for such an inspiring success story!

We have received a wonderful update on Sunny who came to us for a 4 weeks swimming stay to help him to lose weight and overcome EMS. In the third week of his stay Sunny also started a course of SGLT2 inhibitor medication. The week before his stay his insulin levels were tested at over 300 mlU/L. He was tested again in the week following his stay and his insulin levels had reduced to 23 mlU/L.

Based on our experience, combining SGLT2 inhibitor medication such as Ertugliflozin and Canagliflozin with intensive swimming therapy can be very helpful in reducing insulin resistance in horses with EMS.

74 KG IN 4 WEEKS!

Lovely Paint Horse Sunny has made incredible progress with his weight loss journey over the last 4 weeks at Higher Spen. Sunny was referred to us by his vet after being diagnosed as seriously overweight and with EMS with insulin levels of 300 in the week he arrived.

During his stay he has lost 74kg, 12% of his body weight aided by careful dietary management, daily swimming and horse walker exercise. Sunny also commenced a course of Canagliflozin in the 3rd week of his stay. Despite his weight, Sunny is quite forward and worked incredibly hard every day of his stay. He is so much brighter, more mobile and happier in himself following his fantastic weight loss.

Beautiful Welsh pony Forever exceeded our expectations losing 39kg in just one week of swimming! Forever is a very forward swimmer so got maximum benefit from her work in the pool. She also spent an hour per day on the walker warming up and cooling down before and after swimming. All in all a super result for this lovely pony!
