Meet Liz.

Artist, long-time yogi and firm believer that you can’t be “on it” 24/7.

She’s the next yoga Spotlight — I've been waiting patiently for this.

This months the spotlight is on ......Liz Cooke

There are 24 years of friendship, a yoga-practising Grandad and some rather unsuccessful “loving vibrations” in this one.

Liz's yoga spotlight is out on Wednesday. 🙌 🙌

This October, I’m making mental wellbeing the focus of our morning yoga. 🌿

Not because yoga is a cure for anxiety, stress or burnout — it isn’t. But movement, breathing, rest and meditation can give us useful ways to look after ourselves when life feels a bit too much.

Throughout 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, our 30-minute weekday morning practices will explore different ways of supporting our mental wellbeing.

We’ll move, breathe, shake, stretch, strengthen, rest and occasionally simply stop.

Classes will include practices such as 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰, 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐞 & 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞, 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐎𝐟𝐟 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐭 and 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬, alongside short meditations designed to complement what we’ve been exploring on the mat.

You can join me for the whole month and make looking after your mental wellbeing part of your morning routine.

October is Mental Wellness Month at JOY. For the whole month, my 7am morning yoga classes will focus on some of the things many of us struggle with in everyday life — stress, anxiety, overwhelm, depleted energy and simply having too much going on in our heads. Yoga doesn't make the difficult thin....

Donald sent me this video the other day and said, “You'll like this"

He was right. I ❤️ it.

It's Vanja from VanjaMoves talking about something that sounds deceptively simple: 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞

Not another workout. Not trying to get fitter, stronger or more flexible. Just looking at all the little ways modern life has gradually removed movement from our day — chairs, cars, lifts, convenience — and putting some of it back.

As I watched it, I had the slightly strange realisation that I already do most of these things. (I don't have a hanging bar ....yet)
But it also raised some uncomfortable questions.

If you do yoga a few times a week — or even every day — but spend most of the rest of your life sitting down, 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐠𝐚 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡?

I've been mulling that one over, and I've written about in tomorrow's blog.

For now, 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇 this. It's well worth 24 minutes of your time. And I'd be interested to know what you make of it.

How do you know if you’re getting better at yoga?

Can you touch your toes now? Hold a balance for longer? Finally do the pose that used to feel impossible?

Those things can certainly be signs of progress.

But perhaps progress is also noticing when you’re holding your breath. Knowing when to back off. Becoming less bothered about what the person on the mat next to you is doing. Or actually understanding a little more about what you’re practising — and why.

I’ve been thinking about what “getting better” at yoga really means.

New on the blog 👇

How do you know if you’re getting better at yoga? It may have less to do with perfect poses than you think. Exploring progress, practice and what yoga can teach us.

I’ve always thought September feels more like a new year than January does.
New pens. New shoes. New routines. That slightly optimistic feeling that 'this year I’m going to be really organised.'

For twenty years, September in our house has meant someone going back to school.

But not this year.

And although I no longer need to buy PE kits or discover at 9pm that someone needs three black biros by tomorrow morning, I still feel that pull towards a fresh start.

So this week’s blog is about September, changing seasons, changing routines — and why this might be a rather good time to begin again.

I went to a yoga class iin Brighton a couple of weeks a go and the teacher was wearing a t-shirt with a political slogam. It ruined the class for me.

It also made me think about whether politics has a place in a yoga class. I don't have the answer but this is what this weeks blog is all about.

Should politics have a place in a yoga class? A political slogan at a recent class left me wondering where yoga, personal beliefs and inclusivity meet.

Somewhere around mile 40 of a 50-mile bike ride, my 18-year-old son blew me away with a level of insight I wish I'd had at his age.

It became the starting point for this week’s blog — about what quietly happens when you keep showing up.

If I'm going to live a long life I've given a lot of thought to the question 'what do I want to be able to do with it?'

Get up from the floor. Carry my own shopping. Walk for miles. Ride my bike. Swim in the sea. Travel. Climb a hill because I fancy seeing what’s at the top.

So much of what we call independence is actually physical.

And the loss of it can happen remarkably quietly.

This week’s blog is about ageing, movement and why looking after our strength, mobility and balance isn't really about fitness at all.

It’s about 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦.
