Are you breastfeeding and looking for support and advice from a trained professional?

Portage is a home‑visiting educational service for children under five with significant delays in two or more areas of development. The team works closely with families, offering direct teaching, observation, assessment, guidance and a strong foundation of emotional support. They also run play-based sessions in our children’s centres, creating welcoming spaces where families can learn, connect and grow together.

The name Portage comes from the small town in Wisconsin that pioneered the service, which has since grown into an internationally recognised model of early support.

Putting Children at the Centre 💕

In Bury, the Portage team supports children with a wide range of needs - medical, developmental, complex, communication-related, or linked to diagnosed conditions such as autism or speech and language delays, and aims to reach as many children as possible, to help them reach long-term goals together.

Led by dedicated Senior Portage Worker Kelly Judd, the team prioritises getting to know each child’s strengths, needs and interests before creating a personalised programme of small, achievable steps. Using everyday toys and resources already found in the home, Portage workers help families work towards long‑term goals together.

The real value of Portage shines through in how much the service means to the families who use it, and our video brings their voices to the fore as they share some of the benefits they have experienced and explain how Portage has changed their lives.

The Value to Families🥰

Jess, mum to Ori, who speaks openly about the emotional journey of discovering your child has additional needs and shares how Portage transformed her son’s confidence - from hiding in a corner during his first visit, to excitedly greeting his Portage worker, Sophie, as a trusted friend.

Sadly, Ori passed away aged four, but for Jess, Portage sessions created precious moments that she still treasures. She says, “Those were my favourite times of the week. It brought us together… it was special, and I’ll treasure it forever.”

And Arslan and Nida, parents of Hannah, who is non-verbal, but who found a place in a school tailored to her needs with the help of the team, talk about the difference Portage made not only for their daughter, but for them as a family, describing joyful moments like Hannah smiling at 7am just seeing her school uniform being ironed, and the reassurance of having a professional who not only understands their child but supports them as parents.

“We know that Kelly’s just an email away… I feel like I don’t have to worry on my own,” says Nida.
