I’ve changed my mind on this…
Or at least, I’m much more mindful of the context around this tool🔧
“Self talk” is something I am very aware of, both within myself and within my clients
It can quite literally make or break you, dependent on how well you know how to manage it
And in the context of nutrition, it’s almost always something I hammer home to clients, to be more positive about
Because, as the literature currently suggests, positive behaviour change is less likely to occur when we speak to ourselves like 💩
And therefore being a little kinder and more compassionate to ourselves, has a far greater likelihood of helping us make progress!
At least in the context of dietary habits, disordered eating and body image…
There is, however, other evidence to suggest that speaking to yourself a bit more ✨critically✨ can enhance performance by increasing internal motivation and attention (PMID: 34290300)
I have tried both and can say, in the context of TRAINING, the anecdotal evidence implies I respond far better when I’m a b*tch to myself…🤣🤣🤣
Now I say this with humour, so please take it with a pinch of salt
But if, like me, you’ve been struggling with a bit of a mental block or lack of confidence
Play around with how you speak to yourself going into a session, and see how you respond👀
…you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve, when you let your mind BELIEVE🧠🪄

If there’s one thing we can probably all agree on, it’s that social media really encourages a level of creativity we’ve never seen before…
Whether that’s a good thing or not, is very context dependent😅
Now I’m all for people getting creative with movement and exercise, to help them find a method that works for them!
But I’m not for overcomplicating something that can already be overwhelming to manage in the first place💀
If you’re following a structured programme,
Written by someone who knows what they’re doing,
And you practise those movements frequently enough to develop the skills,
You will get better at everything listed in this video ✅
You can do that AND barbell squat, bench press and do HIIT🔥
The two things aren’t mutually exclusive, and you don’t need to overcomplicate your training by thinking about trying to add a million and one extra layers because of content like this❌
Content like this performs well because it sparks debate, controversy and goes against “the norm”
And rightly or wrongly, because of how social media works AND the fact people are always looking for something shiny and “new”…we will continue to see it be made
It also adds to the confusion, misinformation and chaos of the industry that many coaches (including myself) are trying to fight back against🥊
So be vigilant
Ask questions
And if something looks crazy and/or doesn’t make logical sense
There’s probably a very good reason for that🤝
Before anyone comes for me…
No, I’m not saying alcohol is good for you❌
What I am saying is that stress management is one of the most overlooked pieces of the health and fitness puzzle🧩
I’ve worked with people who have spent months obsessing over calories, supplements and meal timing
Whilst completely ignoring the fact they’re running on 5 hours sleep, eating every meal in a rush and spending most of the day in a state of chronic stress🤯
Then they’re surprised when they’re constantly hungry, bloated, struggling with emotional eating, feeling exhausted and finding it difficult to stay consistent…
The goal isn’t to drink more wine (sorry xx)
The goal is to build a lifestyle where your health and fitness supports your life, rather than becoming another source of pressure within it🤝
Sometimes that looks like meal prep.
Sometimes it looks like an early night.
And sometimes it looks like sitting in the middle of a random country in Europe, with a drink in your hand, laughing with someone you love and remembering that life is supposed to be enjoyed too.

“Sometimes a change of scenery is as good as a rest”
…is the excuse I tell myself every time I have the itch to leave the UK🤣
Jokes aside, the phrase is not wrong (at least in my experience) and getting to spend a long weekend exploring a new country with has been a delight🤩
Lots of good food enjoyed
New places explored
And memories made🫶🏼
I think I can now sleep easier at night, knowing I’ve got to see Belgium’s finest architecture, specifically the 3 x famous “pissing” statues, with my own eyes 😭🇧🇪

This weekend we had the debut of the bench bros ( & ) alongside ‘s first ever full power meet and it did NOT disappoint🤩
Spirits were high throughout the entire weekend, they all smashed their weigh ins and gave everything they had on a VERY hot day😮💨

P.S. 10/10 recommend making sure you have a baker in the group because made an outstanding effort at keeping moral high with her homemade cookies😍 (this is why we don’t body build lol)

Had an absolute BLAST of a weekend watching the squad lift lots of heavy circles!🔥
I’m posting this after waking up from unintentionally falling asleep, so a full recap is to come (you know I filmed plenty of BTS lol)…but in the mean time, know that I’m incredibly proud of everyone who competed this weekend!! It was a pleasure to watch🤩
& of course a special well done to for achieving a massive comp PB and to & for smashing their first ever time on the platform🏅💪🏼
That’s a hard enough task on the best of days, let alone when it’s in the middle of a heatwave🥵
It also goes without saying, none of this would be possible without the incredible efforts of the for the events and for the coaching/handling/endless support you always give to us🤝
We are more grateful than you’ll ever know!!
