M2 bumps report:

M2 had a great bumps, going +1 overall. Despite a difficult first day with a penalty bump, the crew kept their heads up on Thursday and ended up crossing top finish, inches from the over bump on Queens’ M2. This momentum continued through to the final two days with a bump on Fitz on Friday - getting 3 whistles around Ditton corner and finally bumping on the reach. Then finally, on Saturday, bumping Churchill on ditton after a 3 boat sandwich with Churchill and Emma down the course- A successful way to finish off the Easter Term.

M3 bumps report:

Race report comes from 7-seat, A***n:
‘The M3 bumps campaign began with much fervour and enthusiasm in the air. Boasting an impressive 12-person rotation across the 5 days (Getting on Race and 4 days of bumps), M3 were set to row with fresh legs and fresh vibes. A strong and clean GoR ensured a place for the crew third from the top in Div 5, and set them up for fun and sun-filled days of rowing.

The first day ensued with Selwyn chasing Downing M3 and being chased by Peterhouse M3. Coming off a rapid start sequence, the crew had Downing on a whistle within the minute. However, an unfortunate rudder accident saw an unfortunate collision of the boat with the bank, resulting in a Peterhouse bump of Selwyn. Not letting this dampen spirits, the crew started anew the next day. Peterhouse M3, having bumped Downing M3 speedily, resulted in a long chase where Selwyn slowly but surely gained on Fitz M3 for the overbump. The row-over hides the strong and well put together rowing from the crew, who finished just three-quarters of a boat length behind Fitz M3. The third day held a similar outcome, with our crew putting on a strong start but remaining just short of bumping the crew in front. The last day featured a cat and mouse game, where Selwyn did well to hold off a blading St Edmunds M2 crew while gaining a whistle on Downing M3. A sketchy clearing off the river, however, resulted in the M3 crew losing valuable seconds, being forced to take the outside corner to turn. An unexpected event that led to St Edmund’s M2 bumping Selwyn.

With an overall result of -2, M3 remain determined to prove their mettle next term. With intentions of coming back stronger, bigger, and most importantly, with even more rowing chat and enthusiasm, this M3 will soon be a force to be reckoned with.’

W2 bumps report:

Selwyn W2 took to our bumps campaign on Wednesday by first bumping Corpus Christi W2 whilst second in Div 5. After a speedy bump we turned right back around as the sandwich boat in Div 4 to bump Jesus W4, another speedy win. On the second day we had another very quick bump on Clare W4, bumping well before the motorway bridge. Then, on the third day, we knew that Wolfson had a high chance of catching Girton before we could catch them, which did end up happening. We kept racing on to get an overbump on Kings W2 in the Gut! On the final day we set out with super high hopes for some super (super!) blades and bumped St Catherine’s W3 before the motorway bridge. This is the first Selwyn Women’s side Mays blade to be achieved in 21 years and the highest that Selwyn Women have ever progressed in Bumps (+7)!!

W1 bumps report:

Selwyn W1 began May bumps in the W2 division position 5.
The week began with row overs in day one and two, with the crew putting in an impressive shift in the heat. On day one, missing out on the overbump on Kings W1, on day 2 narrowly missing the bump on Jesus W2.
However our efforts of the term began to pay off as Jesus W2 was bumped on the reach on day 3 thanks to some fantastic corners by our cox Rujuta and our bow four. Our final day ended in excitement as W1 overtook Christs W1 into Ditton as their cox refused to concede, to make one of the most dramatic selwyn women’s bumps! W1 ended bumps in position 3 going up two in total and brining us a couple of steps closer to division 1 and the highest a selwyn women’s crew has been in Mays since 2015!

M1 bumps report:

Selwyn M1 started off their Bumps campaign in position 11, division 1 with burning intent to break into the top 10. We were set for a challenging week being on the heels of some incredibly fast crews.

We kicked off our campaign with two assertive row-overs. Chasing the lightning Peterhouse M1 on day one, we confidently held off LMBC M2 down the length of the Bumps course. Although we aspired to catch an overbumped Downing M1 on the second day, they were able to catch Pembroke M1 before we could reach them. To really show our speed, however, we doubled the gap from the previous day on LMBC M2, leaving us confident and hungry for the bump on day three.

This time determined and chasing Pembroke M1, we executed our plan perfectly and flew off the start, bumping them on the Gut just before Grassy Corner. Spirits were incredibly high as we donned the customary foliage before paddling home proudly in front of the amazing Selwyn spectators. With the knowledge that we had reached the top 10, we resolved to give our everything on the final day as we once again chased Downing M1.

This determination could be seen in our practice start, during which we hit the fastest 500m split we had recorded together as a crew (please trust the author - it was proper quick!). In spite of this, Downing narrowly evaded us once again by bumping a spooning King’s M1. This did not stop us, however, as we hurtled down the course all the way to Top Finish for the first time since 1990. With this satisfying end to the campaign, and having achieved that which we had set out to achieve, Selwyn M1 are proud to consider this year’s May Bumps a great success!

This year’s campaign would really be nothing without the leavers, whose experience and commitment to the club have certainly inspired in this incredibly grateful rower a real passion for both Selwyn and the sport; they will be sincerely missed by the club. They have left us with ambition to continue ascending the ranks in the years to come! Thank you, all.

We now turn our sights towards qualifiers for Henley Royal Regatta on Friday 25th of June in our composite boat with Christ’s College.

Before bumps starts tomorrow, here is a quick recap of what SCBC crews have been getting up to so far this term:

Near the start of term, we sent 4 Eights to Bedford Regatta - the first off-Cam race for the women’s side in a while! W1 won their first race (pic 2), and W2 their first two, but unfortunately both went down to strong Jesus College crews. The men had a slightly tougher draw, with both M1 (pic 1) and M2 bowing out in the first round, M1 to eventual winners, the University of East Anglia.

Earlier in term, the men’s side raced at Head of the Cam and Spring H2H, both M1 and M2 (pic 3) coming away with a win in the former, and M1 placing second in the latter.

Finally, Champs Head was well attended by Selwyn crews, with 5 boats racing! W1 and W2 came away with wins in their category (pics 4, 6), while M1 (pic 5) and M2 placed third and the women’s Easter novice crew enjoyed their first race of term (pic 7)!

SCBC is excited to report that we have successfully completed our 24-hour Ergathon event, not only passing the 300km target, but over doubling it to row a total of 702km.
Thanks to the dedication of SCBC rowers and generosity of fellows, alumni, family, and friends, we have raised over £9620 towards the purchase of a new women’s four and men’s pair. This is just short of our £10,000 goal and we would appreciate any extra donations in the final weeks of fundraising to make up this £400.
The current President of SCBC, H**e, reports:
"It has been a joy to watch the club come together for the ergathon – SCBC members have gone above and beyond, picking up extra slots, erging alongside each other, and pushing themselves to the max to reach the greatest distance during their slot. Men's and women's side rowers, alumni, and coxes have all put in huge shifts and I couldn't be prouder as club President.
We are so thankful to all the alumni, Fellows, friends, and family who have supported this event so far, and I hope everyone has enjoyed keeping up with our progress."

*HoRR RACE REPORT* Selwyn M1

M1 travelled down to London on this weekend, competing at the annual Head of the River Race, along the Tideway from Mortlake to Putney on Saturday 22nd March. After a successful Lent Term so far, M1 enjoyed the opportunity to compete with club and academic crews from around the UK and overseas along one of the most iconic courses in the sport.

This year’s race report comes from 5 seat Guy Tregear:

‘Fuelled by protein pancakes and hot cross buns, we rigged and boated from the picturesque Furnivall Sculling Club early in the morning and soon made our way up the Thames towards Mortlake for marshalling. Having warmed up, marshalled and practiced a couple of bursts, M1 started racing just after 10am.

Building from a confident start, we soon settled onto a steady rate and a fast pace, establishing a substantial lead over the crews behind. With the aid of some excellent lines form coxswain Harry West and alumni cheering on at Hammersmith we raced hard all the way to Putney Bridge.’

Selwyn achieved a strong time to finish 186th, besting many other college crews and qualifying for next year’s race.

M1 now looks forward to a promising Easter Term.

The crew returns to Cambridge just in time for a quick recovery before joining the rest of SCBC in the 24-hour fundraising Ergathon, which begins on Monday 24th March at 5pm.
