Who knew that a six-second drum loop from a 1969 soul track would spark a rhythmic revolution and give birth to an entirely new genre of music, born in the UK: drum and bass? But what is it?*
Jeff Philippson, Cambridge Scientist aka DJ IndicaDnB is going to take us on a journey into sound - of breaking beats. Where did DnB come from? How does it make us feel? Jeff started dj-ing - around when that photo was taken, and hasn't stopped.
We will be providing Pizza - Sicilian pizzas from Aromi and wine from Cambridge Wine Merchants. We are asking for contributions of £14 to cover this. Tickettailor link to pay.
We are the Cambridge Salon - a varied meetup 4 times a year. Introducing interesting people in the city to each other from science, arts, tech, medicine, education - anywhere! Our aim is to mix up existing networks to create friendships and collaborations.
We will be collecting donations for Earth and Mind which works with the Cambridge Access Surgery - an NHS GP Surgery for people experiencing homelessness in the city. Salon member and GP Damita will tell us more.
See you there!

Drum and Bass played a crucial role in the evolution of electronic dance music (EDM). Emerging from the UK’s rave culture, it brought together various musical influences like breakbeat, dub, reggae, hip-hop, and jazz, creating a genre with fast, complex rhythms and heavy basslines. Its distinct sound influenced many subsequent genres, including grime, dubstep, and garage, each of which shares roots in the UK underground electronic scene.
