MATCH RESULT: (Cuppers Round of 16)
Clare I’s (3) vs Pembroke I’s (2)
MOTM: Callum Thomson

The magic of the cup was well and truly alive on Sunday as underdogs Clare surged to victory over a Pembroke side topping the division above.
It was a tight first half during which Clare had the lion’s share of the ball but struggled to create many clearcut chances, while a slick defence of James Adeosun, Matt Wright and Matt de Brett stifled any sign of danger
However, as the second half was drawing to a close, captain James Rodgers let loose a stunning drive from range which rocketed into the top corner to rapturous celebration from CCFC.
The lead was extended in the second half as the dominant midfield trio linked up, Ed Cooke sliding a delicate ball through to Man of the Match Callum Thompson to slot cooly past the salmon-clad Pembroke keeper.
Around the 70 minute mark, Pembroke started to get back into the game as they threw everything at Clare to get back into the game and eventually the pressure gave with a set piece setting the score at 2-1
The next 15 were a true test of Clare’s concentration, endurance and mental strength as they weathered a storm, putting their bodies on the line in an increasingly physical encounter. Finally, bursting forward as a yellow hive on another dangerous counter and Josh Korber Hoffman was able to finesse finish right into the bottom corner to kill off the game, after some excellent individual work from Arthur Seymour. Even another late consolation goal for Pembroke with one of the final kicks of the game couldn’t unnerve Clare, as they go marching on to Cuppers Glory.

Huge CONGRATULATIONS to Ollie Lerway, Clare finalist and CUAFC right-winger, who was part of a victorious Cambridge team today at Barnet in the Varsity Match.

Ollie has given almost three years of service to the university and college football teams, captaining Clare to 4th place in Division 3 last year. Fortunately he has been more successful with the university team and now has the Varsity medal he deserves.

MATCH RESULT: (League Game)
Men's Football vs Darwin
Lost 2-0
MOTM: Morgan Phillips
Report: Clare frustratingly lost a close game to Darwin as they near the end of their season. The boys in yellow were missing a few key players, notably Ed Cooke , Arya Theivendram and Matt de Brett, but started well with a few dangerous moves and good movement up front from Amit Balter and Jayme Benson. A new formation - the narrow diamond championed by interim boss Matthew Wright - proved hard to adjust to and Clare switched back to a classic 4-3-3 midway through the first half, with James Rodgers leading the line. Jake Thomas struggled with injury in the middle of the park (its hard being a post-grad), but still pulled the strings and orchestrated some fine moves, as did Callum Thomson, who stood out as the best player on the pitch. Morgan Philips added to his growing list of top drawer performances with another stellar shift screening the defence.
The second half was also competitive, with Clare struggling to get into their rhythm and get their passing going. Darwin had a few close chances but Jake Ballin stood strong in goal and Keji Neri stood solid at the back. Unfortunately, following a Clare corner and a quick break from Darwin, the visitors went ahead with 10 minutes to play; player-manager Matthew Wright with the misfortune of his tackle playing the Darwin striker through on goal. Moments later, Clare equalised through Callum Thomson, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside after mass protests from the home side and fans.
As Clare pushed to get back into a game they deserved to draw, if not win, Darwin grabbed another on the counter.
Lots of positives to take for the boys in yellow, but also areas of improvement to take into Wednesday’s hotly anticipated clash with highflying Gonville and Caius.
