In 2019, New York artist Richard Phillips put three of his most iconic paintings onto one of the most recognisable cars ever to race at Le Mans. This is the story of how it came together, from a conversation in the paddock in 2013 to seeing the finished car on the grid six years later.

This interview was originally conducted for The Checkered Flag but was never published. We're pleased to share it now, for the first time, on Porsche Motorsport Community.

Fifty-five years ago this week, Hans Herrmann stood on the edge of racing history.

After 19 years of chasing the ultimate prize at Le Mans, Porsche was still searching for its first overall victory. The 917K had shown devastating speed in 1969 but lacked the reliability to survive 24 hours of racing.

Everything changed on 14 June 1970. Herrmann, planning to retire after the race, partnered with Englishman Richard Attwood in the distinctive white and green Porsche Salzburg 917K. For 24 gruelling hours, they battled Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and even other Porsche teams.

When the chequered flag fell at 4pm on Sunday, Herrmann and Attwood had covered 4,607 kilometres - more than anyone in Le Mans history to that point.

Ferry Porsche himself was trackside to witness his company's first overall victory.

For Herrmann, it was the perfect end to a glittering career. For Porsche, it was just the beginning of a Le Mans legacy that would span decades.

What followed would make motorsport history.

Seventy-four years ago this month, a small German sports car manufacturer sent two cars to Le Mans for the very first time.

Nobody expected miracles from Porsche.

June 1951 marked Porsche's debut at the world's most famous endurance race. While the established manufacturers like Jaguar, Ferrari, and Talbot-Lago battled for overall victory, Porsche quietly focused on their class - and immediately proved they belonged.

The 356 SL Aluminium Coupé, driven by Auguste Veuillet and Edmond Mouche, secured a stunning class victory in the 1100cc category. It was a modest beginning, but it planted the seed for everything that would follow.

From that first tentative step in 1951 to becoming the most successful manufacturer in Le Mans history with 19 overall victories - the journey began with understanding that you must first learn to win your class before you can win overall.

Every legend starts with a single step. For Porsche at Le Mans, that step came 74 years ago this month.

The greatest racing story ever told was just beginning. 🏁

Porsche Takes Double Podium in Front of Packed Mexico City Crowd

Porsche secured second and third places at the Mexico City E-Prix, with António Félix da Costa and Pascal Wehrlein sharing their first podium together in front of 40,000 spectators. Despite early race dominance and a front-row lockout in qualifying, both factory drivers were ultimately overcome by Nissan's Oliver Rowland in a dramatic late-race charge.

Andretti's Jake Dennis fought for victory before finishing fourth, while teammate Nico Müller scored his first points of the season in ninth. The result puts da Costa at the top of the drivers' championship, with Porsche leading both teams' and manufacturers' standings.
