Heatstroke in Horses - It's a real risk!!

In the UK, horses are not acclimatised to the temperatures we are seeing at the moment so as owners, we need to be taking extra measures to avoid heatstroke. Overheating can quickly escalate into a medical emergency and there is a real risk of severe injury or death. Please take this seriously.

> Exercise only in the early hours or late evening. During the very high temperatures avoid exercise altogether.

> Provide shade - If your stables are not cool and well ventilated then your horse may be better out with shade. Find the coolest solution!

> Avoid travelling during the heatwave. Just change your plans. If you MUST travel, the best time is early morning or late evening. Take fans and water in case you get stuck in traffic. Soak your horse with cold water before you leave.

> Add electrolytes to feed as per the manufacturer's guidelines.

> Water - Provide plain, clean water at all times. Horses should be allowed to drink when they want to. Don’t restrict water, even right before and after exercise.

> Cooling - Showering horses with cold water is the best method of cooling them down. Do this regularly during the day if they are struggling to stay cool. Do not stop to scrape. Leave the water on your horse and let it evaporate naturally.

Which horses are at risk:

> ALL horses are at risk during the heatwave. Those more at risk include, the old/young, overweight/large horses, dark coloured horses, those with underlying conditions (such as cushings, asthma) and colic prone horses.

What are the signs of heatstroke:

> Puffing, blowing, laboured breathing

> Sweating, raised veins, hot to touch

> Weakness, staggering and collapse

What to do if your horse collapses:

> The priority is to cool the horse's body temperature as quickly as you possibly can and the way to do this is with cold water, not ice packs or cooling rugs, just cold hosing. Call the Vet!! Shower cold water all over the body until the horse recovers. This may take 10-15 minutes. If they start to recover after a few minutes and are distressed you can give them a short walk before continuing with the rapid cooling.

This advice is taken from scientist Dr David Marlin who has 25 years of experience working in equine thermoregulation and has 20+ scientific papers published on the subject. Please check out his website for lots of evidence backed advice for how to care for your horse in the heat. 12/07/2025

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everybody that tags me in messages when people are looking for a back person to help them.

I have been working hard in recent years to continue improving the techniques I use. This is really paying dividends now and I am seeing & hearing about great results after most sessions. My motivation has always been, & will always be, to help my clients become pain free & moving better 💯

I am very fortunate that my diary is nice & busy and I have lots of you to thank for that.

Please don’t stop sharing the love 🙏❤️ 🐎 🐕
