Film Night: Fermat's Last Theorem

7.30 pm Thursday 13th February 2025

It was at Milton Road Library in the 1960s that Sir Andrew Wiles, born in Cambridge and then 10 years old, came across the problem of Fermat’s Last Theorem which had puzzled mathematicians for over three centuries. In 1994 he proved the theorem to wide acclaim, making front page headlines worldwide. A room and plaque celebrating his achievement are now part of our library.

Join us for a screening of the 1996 BBC Horizon film about Andrew Wiles and his proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. The film explains his extraordinary achievement, including interviews with Sir Andrew and his eminent colleagues, as well as unpicking the complicated mathematics involved.
