🍂 AUTUMN WORMING – DON’T RUSH TO WORM! 🐴

As temperatures drop, encysted worms become a consideration. Once temperatures are consistently below around 6°C, worms stop producing eggs and become encysted in the gut — meaning a faecal egg count (FEC) can no longer give us the full picture.

🌡️ But we’re not there yet!

So, from now through to the end of November, keep submitting your FECs so we can build a better picture of your horse’s worm burden before the winter temperatures arrive.

🍂 Autumn is also a great time to test for tapeworm. I recommend using an Equisal tapeworm saliva test alongside your FEC, as tapeworm don’t consistently shed eggs and can therefore be missed by a FEC.

We all know that owning horses through winter can be hard work, especially when life is throwing everything else at you too.

Soaked socks, soggy horses and some very happy feet! 🤣🌧️🐴

Monday was definitely the day I realised summer is over… I got absolutely drenched right down to my ..... socks! 🧦

But the weather didn’t stop a busy day of hoofcare.

✨ A lovely new golden oldie client getting his balance back after a break from regular hoofcare.

✨ 8 long-term clients I’ve been trimming for years — including strong, healthy feet that are looking great, although the horse has some body tightness. A reminder that sometimes the feet can only take us so far… bodywork can be just as important.

✨ A PPID (cushings) pony whose owners are keeping a close eye on her as we head through the seasonal ACTH rise. New fat pads and a hard crest are warning signs worth taking seriously.

✨ And finishing with a gelding who has struggled with weak feet, thin soles and underdeveloped heels… but is looking fantastic! ❤️

I genuinely love helping horses and donkeys become healthier, happier and more comfortable through better hoof care. Every hoof, every animal and every situation is different, and I love being able to work out what each one needs.

But every now and then, you get feedback like this… and it really does make me smile! 🥰

Knowing the work I do makes a difference not only to the horses and donkeys, but also gives their owners confidence and understanding, means so much to me.

Whilst many EPs down South are talking about rock-solid feet after a dry summer, I’m still seeing plenty of hooves showing the effects of last winter’s wet weather! 🌧️🐴

We’ve had some lovely summer days, but the ground here has remained surprisingly wet. I’m still seeing white line separation, thrush and soft outer walls — even on some lovely big feet.

If your horse or donkey can have some time standing off the wet grass, it can make a real difference.

Applying Red Horse Products Field Paste can also help support and toughen up soggy frogs. 🐸

🌱 Never underestimate the environment when it comes to hoof health! The ground your horse stands on can have a huge influence on their feet.

I'll be away from Friday 11th September until Sunday 13th September, so please don't drop off any FEC samples during this period, as they won't be processed.

✅ Any samples dropped off before Friday 11th Sept will be processed before I leave.

📆 Normal service will resume on Monday 14th Sept.

Just another bit of training.....

I really enjoyed this course, with some fantastic inputs from the brilliant Dr Sue Dyson, all about lameness and how to spot those very subtle signs that can so easily be missed. 🐴🔎

A lot of the content was covered in detail during my Level 5 Diploma in Equine Podiatry, but there’s something about hearing different perspectives on familiar topics that makes the grey matter work a little harder! 🧠😂

And that can only be a good thing when it comes to continuing to learn and improve the care I provide to my clients and their horses.

Always learning, always questioning, and always looking to do better. 🐴✨

🍂 Is your horse or donkey due a PPID check? 🐴🫏

September and October are a great time to think about PPID (Cushing’s) testing (or re-testing).

At this time of year, horses and donkeys naturally have a seasonal rise in ACTH — the hormone measured when screening for PPID. This rise peaks around late September/early October.

This means autumn testing can help identify horses and donkeys with PPID, including those showing only subtle signs.

👀 Things to look out for include:

🫏 delayed or abnormal coat shedding
🐴 muscle loss or weight changes
🫏 increased drinking or urination
🐴 repeated laminitis or increased hoof discomfort
🫏 a change in attitude or performance

💉 The Liphook Equine Hospital's free PPID testing scheme makes this an ideal time to speak to your vet about testing if you have concerns.

If your horse or donkey is already medicated for PPID then this could also be a good time to ensure the medication levels are sufficient.

Early diagnosis means you can discuss appropriate management and treatment with your vet and help your horse or donkey stay healthier for longer. ❤️ You can find out brilliant information on The Laminitis Site pages to keep you fully informed!
