🏆 Machcarra Cup – Sunday 20 September 2026 🏆

As part of our 150th Anniversary celebrations, we were delighted to have the Machcarra Cup added back into our local club competitions. The Machrihanish v Carradale competition dates back to the 1970s but had not been played for a number of years due to our clubhouse fire and Covid.

A total of 28 players took to the links, with the weather proving every bit as testing as the course itself. Strong westerly winds made for a true examination of skill and resilience. The match remained closely contested right down to the final game on the 18th green, where Machrihanish secured a hard-fought 4 –3 victory. A huge thank-you to everyone who represented their clubs so proudly.

Pictured is Donald MacAlister (Nonnie) presenting the Machcarra Cup to winning team captain Dean Ratcliff. Players at the after-match lunch also extended their warm appreciation to Nonnie and Dean for their work behind the scenes in organising this year’s match.

Carradale will host next year’s match on Sunday 12 September 2027, and we look forward to continuing this much-loved local competition.

A great day for both clubs, and a fitting celebration in our anniversary year.

Autumn Meetings, Saturday 12th of September

Machrihanish golfers braved testing weather on Saturday, as the club staged its Autumn Meetings across the Championship and Pans courses. Conditions proved particularly demanding on the Championship course, where only three players returned net scores below par.

Stephen Kelly set the early standard with an excellent gross 73, a score that secured both the scratch prize and the Silver Medal.

In the handicap competition, Alex Souden produced the round of the day with a remarkable net 65, finishing two shots clear of runner-up Graham Gilchrist. David Rankin claimed the over-65 category.

The Ladies’ Autumn Meeting on the Pans course was also played in difficult conditions. Jennifer Gilchrist won the handicap event, while Elizabeth Casey took the scratch prize.

The Lachlan MacKinnon Memorial Plate was played with weather conditions improving over the course on Saturday 5th September. The strong winds abated and the showers petered out for the later tee times. Thirty-seven members participated in this Stableford event played off the white, yellow and red tees. Posting the best score of the day was Alex Souden who returned a great score of 40 points, with Stephen Kelly (bih) ahead of I McLeod, both scoring 37 points.

The Bert Millar Trophy was played over the Pans course on Sunday 6th September. Eleven juniors played through some extremely windy conditions and should be congratulated for posting some great scores in this 9-hole Stableford competition.

Thunderer Cup -Saturday 29th August

Members enjoyed flat calm conditions for the Thunderer Cup.
Early leader in the clubhouse with an excellent nett 66 was Charlie Robertson. Shortly afterwards, Marc Paterson bettered this by one shot, shooting his best round of the year. However it was Jim McCallum - playing in the last group of the day - who continued his fine vein of form to win the Thunderer Cup with a fantastic 73 gross (nett 63).

August Midweek Stableford and Glencaladh Bowl

For the monthly midweek stableford played on Wednesday 26th August, the fine weather continued with only a light breeze present on the course.
The Glencaladh Bowl was also played for on the day, for those who are past and present committee members.
Twenty-seven members participated in the Stableford event played off both yellow and red tees for men and ladies respectively.
Posting the best score of the day, Maggie MacArthur achieved a fantastic 42 points; not to be out-done, playing partner Ian MacKinnon recorded a 36 point total to win the Mens stableford and win the Glencaladh Bowl.

David Irwin Memorial Texas Scramble Open

Thirty-four teams of four participated in the David Irwin Memorial competition on Sunday 30th of August.
Played in a scramble format, from white tees, the golfers could not have wished for better weather for this popular event, marking the high esteem “The Beatle” holds amongst club members.
It was the visiting teams who largely featured in the prizes this year, although it was a very close contest with no fewer than five teams on 53 points.

August Medal (Saturday 22nd of August)
Members enjoyed excellent weather on Saturday 22nd of August for the monthly medal held on the Championship course.
With five birdies on his card, Lee Mathieson recorded the best score of the day with an excellent one-under par gross to win Division one with a net 63.
In all forty-four players participated across all categories with results below.

Pans Course
For the RNLI – Best 9 holes eclectic event held over two days (Saturday 15th and Wednesday 19th of August), Mary McIntyre continued her fine form with a net 74 to win the competition.
